it just started recently. i here alot of check the vac lines and carb adjustments is this a start
it also is starting to get what sounds like a valve tap.
compression is great on all cylinders. anyone know how to re do the settings on an edlebrock 4 barrell as well? also when i get on it it tends to backfire.

If it is not a cylinder serving a large vacuum line then check the compression. If it has none, check the valve train. Otherwise suspect insufficient electricity to provide spark when running. The faster the engine runs the more energy it needs at the spark plug to light the fire in the cylinder so not running or at idle spark checks sometimes are wrong for a running engine.

Go in this order. You state a dead miss. This means one cylinder is not firing at all so -
First change the spark plug by swapping it out.
If no luck, change the plug wire by swapping it out.
If no luck yet, look closely at dist. cap for crack at indicated cylinder.
If no luck is cylinder supplying high vacuum to power brakes? If so, check out vacuum ball.
If no vacuum leak or not a vacuum cylinder then you have no compression on that cylinder. Pull valve cover and look for valve train problems such as bad cam lobe, broken or bent push rod or rocker arm, broken valve spring, loose rocker arm etc. Repair the problem.

Could be a bad contact in the distributor cap, bad spark plug cable, or a bad spark plug. Worst case, low or no compression in a cylinder.

not getting spark where you pull one wire at time then crank motro an dlift off a wire to see if it changes way it runs coul dbe a bad plug or a wire or a rotor button or a bad cap to a bad lobe on cam or a bad valve or rocker arm
