My friend has a Chevy 4.3 carbureted sand rail. The rail has been having a serious overheating issue. He replaced the water pump and all the hoses, but still the engine overheats. There is no thermostat installed, but that is not the problem. Thought it could be a cracked head or head gasket so we did a compression check on the engine and there was not a large variation between each cylinder. Each cylinders compression was pretty close to each other. The engine overheated and the oil was a little milky, but after it cooled down the oil isn't milky anymore. The plugs are dry when you pull them out. Having the rail idle for a long period of time you are able to touch # 1&2 cylinders and they are not that hot. Could there be a massive crack in the engine? If the block was cracked wouldn't you get some other indication besides the overheating(like extremely milky oil, low compression, wet plugs)? Stumped on this one
The cooling fan works and we did a flush of the radiator.
