I started getting acne on my chest about 2 years ago when I was 23. Before then, I'd never had a problem with body acne.
It acutally flared up that summer, and then went away for a while, and now I have it back again for the past 9 months to a year, or so. At first, I thought my skin was sensitive to the body wash I was using in the shower. It's a scented kind. So I started using a different brand of body wash that says it's for sensitive skin, and used a loofah, but that actually made it worse. It seemed that when it unclogged my pores, it left more of them open to get clogged and pus-y. So since then, I've started just using regular soap, but I still have a lot of pimples on my chest, and when I touch the skin on my whole upper chest area, it feels greasy and rough, like all of my pores are clogged.
Are there any suggestions on how I can get rid of this? Do those over the counter acne treatments work? Or should I see a dermatologist?
I'd really like to not have pimples all over my chest this summer when I'm wearing tank tops and swimsuits.

Thanks!

Ive read that its not all that necessary to wash your whole body when showering and that the warm water from the shower or bath should do a good enough job cleaning away the bad stuff. Its not necessary to have your skin squeeky clean since the natural oils (which are good) are what keep your skin moisturized and prevent aging better. Ive recently stopped using soaps on my body except for my underarms and things like that and I think that the clogged pores are starting to come out a bit. I dont know if they are just cleaning themselves out naturally or if more oils are pushing the sebum plugs out (or if thats the same thing). Im not seeing any new ones on my chest so far although its not drastically clearing up or anything like that. Im just going to give it more time to see if my skin will naturally heal itself.

The same thing happened to me with back acne.
Only difference, I started getting back acne at 34.
Your body is probably producing alot of oil and this is whats causing the body acne.
The best product for body acne is Doxycycline.
You got to get this prescribed from a derm.
Doxycycline will control the oil your body is producing and clear your body of the acne.

There is no shelf product you can buy that will stop the acne from growing.
Only an anti biotic will stop it.
The Doxycycline is 30 pills. Get the version thats 100 mg.
Take one pill a day

I would also recommend using Neutrogena Body Clear Body Scrub.
This has 2 percent Salicylic Acid, Green Tea and Aloe and is very good for body acne.
Its the best body wash i'v used for body acne.
Leave this on your body for like 1 minute then wash off.

Thanks, both of you, for your replies!

saphire, I actually have been trying what you suggested- not using soap, and it seems that my chest acne is already clearing up! Thanks!

Im glad its working for you! I too have not noticed any new bumps on my chest, I just see the old spots healing. Ive actually done the same for my face and am thinking that it might be working, I dont even wash my face everyday, not even with water either, but I dont know if that has anything to do with it. My husband had acne when he was younger, and he doesnt have a regimen. He just washes mostly with water and only with mild soap when he feels like it. And he also does not put on any moistuizer. Im just thinking that the body should naturally do just fine with water for cleaning (although Im not willing to do the same or my underarms) because its not like our skin ever needed these chemicals in the first place. Whoever came up with needing soap anyways? well

This is for Stoler99. I gotta question. How long did u take doxycycline before u came off of it and did ur body acne come back after u went off of it?
