I bought a used toyota camry 2001 from a friend 6 months ago. At that time we split the cost of a new front exhaust pipe. I had 2 occasions
when my car would not start and I had to be jumped. Auto zone stated the alternator was not at 100%, so I changed it. Now, my engine light has come on 2 x. The first time, the dealer fixed the EGR valve assembly and modulator, the spark plugs, the serpentine belt, valve cover gasket and did an oil change. The light came on again. Now
the dealer states the front exhaust system needs to be changed. Since the first job was done with after market parts, they will not guarantee what they do. They said the most expensive part needed will be covered under warranty. Not sure what to do? The other service station will not redo the exhaust since it was under the previous owners name! Guess I pay for the same part again? This is killing my wallet.

Yeah. You pay for the same part again. But, the warranty will be under your name and therefore will be covered should it go back for the same thing. Don't expect the light to never come on again just cause you fixed one thing or 2 things or 10 things. Do you have any clue how many things can go wrong with a car? Plus, you only paid for 1/2 the part the first time.
It's a USED car and things will go bad on it. If the first owner didn't take care of the car, more things will go wrong with it. And if you don't maintain it correctly, it will cost money to repair. Have the oil changed every single 3000 miles. Have the transmission fluid and filter changed. Any good mechanic will print you off a sheet that shows what maintenance should be done at certain mileage.
