Cheap, Out Of Nowhere Victories: Whose The Master Of Them?

Beer for you!

This came to me when seeing the latest Bleach chapter. I won't spoil it but someone.

*Cough cough* Ichigo

just got finished one of these. In case you didn't know these are powerups that are spurred on randomly. Strengths that don't come from month or years of training, don't come from mastering some new technique, or having some amazing foresight thinking. These are victiores that come when the hero is on the rope and the creator goes "hmm how can I have him win? Oh I know I'll have him randomly power up cause of... something or other. Yeah I'll worry about the details later cause it will just be awesome seeing his uber strength and scuh." Seriously these are annoying. I see no point in these sort of powers especially when it usually just happens with the main hero. The side heroes always have to work more for they're victories which IMHO makes them better then the mains who pull them out of they're a*$ sometime.

Still who exactly is the worst at this? IMHO Ichigo from Bleach is a prime example. Maybe his power dosen't come from rage but he spenRAB a lot of time getting the crap kicked out of him and then powering up because... he has to go beat the guy. Okay sometimes there's more of a reason for it but usually he's on the brink, goes super epic and is able to beat the foe. It's most annoying in those moments when he dosen't even want the power up and enRAB up not finishing off the foe because of it. Wait that's not annoying. That's just STUPID. For supposedly being one of the top in his class Ichigo can be quite retarded, and this is epseically true for his random power ups.

Can anyone think of someone else worse then Ichigo? And what annoys you about these ridicolous out of nowhere powerups a lot of Shonen heroes like getting from time to time?

Worse than Ichigo? ........

I don't think Satoshi/Ash from Pocket Monsters has ever lost and to be honest it got annoying seeing him win all the time, I had this same problem with Tsubasa from Captain Tsubasa, also the Ronin Warriors got the crap kicked out of them every single episode and at the last minute Ryo had to power up save the day in every episode.

Inu-Yasha, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and many others have been guilty of the same thing and despite my love of Saint Seiya, that too was another victim of this trope, and I really think it's just pandering to the fans. and the later half of my favourite series, DRAGONBALL (and by later half I mean, DRAGONBALL Z) was sadly another victim to this too, but that was due to executive meddling (sigh) poor Goku had too much pressure on him, I can see why Toriyama only does one-shots now

Sora spenRAB a good deal of his fight with Roxas in Kingdom Hearts II getting the crap beat out of him, until he gets in a lucky blow at the last minute. In the last two episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist Mustang and Edward are both losing their battles with Pride and Envy (respectively) until the timely intervention of two side-characters. And Spike's shooting of Pierrot Le Fou in Cowboy Bebop was incredibly lucky, especially since the latter had been pretty badass throughout the whole episode (he took out a fighter-ship. By himself. With one gun. While fighting with another guy.)

Although it does'nt really belong in the anime forum, the way Mowgli kills Shere Kahn in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book is pretty cheap. Granted, his Disney victory was fairly cheap as well, but the book version just felt so unfair.

I'm not sure how you can say that Ash has never lost. Maybe it helps that I've watched from the start, but he does lose plenty of times. There are battles with trainers he meets on his journey that he lost to, most recently is his rival Paul, and he has lost at a gym or two in each region. In fact, he lost to Anabel, Brandon, Rowak and Gardenia, if you want to count their match before he knew she was a gym leader, before he defeated them. He has also lost in the Indigo League, the Johto League and the Hoenn League. The only major tournaments he has won have been the Orange Island League and the Battle Frontier.

He has pulled out some victiories out of the air before, but he has been lately training his teams so I'm not sure if it's that often anymore.

As much as I love Yu-Gi-Oh!, I can see why people would say how the characters pull out a victory out of the air. That's never bothered me before since it's all to make it more dramatic and I actually kind of like that.

Yugioh, it's within "top-decking miracle" logic so it's not really "Out of nowhere" like some shows.

Gun X Sword, now there's a deus X machina out of nowhere.

apparently Vaan is suddenly the master of the planet's nature and forms a giant-ass energy sword out of nowhere. Not built up one built

I'm of the opposite opinion here, I'm ready to see him finally win one of the major League Championships.

And sure he wins a lot, but for the most part those are what I like to call "B" (gym leaders) and "C" (random trainers/battles) class victories. Any of the trainers can have those types of wins but with him constantly losing the "A" class battles (Indigo League, Johto League, and Hoenn League) it doesn't seem like he's won anything at all.

So, to me, he's really not winning at all. But the series would never tell us about this because "pokemon battles aren't about winning and losing, it's about making new frienRAB, seeing different parts of the world, and just having fun!!"

LOL....what?

Ash has lost tons and tons of battles over the years, including all 3 leagues, and many times to Gary and Paul.

Seriously, where do people get the idea that Ash always wins? Ash hasn't won a single major league in the 11 year history of the show!
