Cheap CDMA data? for college student

I'm on a Verizon Family Share Plan and my VX6000 is up for a new-after-two upgrade. Probably my favorite feature of my current phone/plan is that I can tether only using minutes. I only use this occasionally, but it's absolutely GREAT to have when one goes on road trips.

If I am going to lose this feature even just by getting a new LG flip phone, then fine, I can live without it - I NEED a new phone, mine's finally dying. But if there's any way I can keep cheap data service, then I'm all for it.

I'd really like a bigger-screen phone like a Blackberry 7250, but I don't want to pay $44.99/month for the blackberry plan. I do a LOT of text messaging, and the blackberry form factor is probably ideal for me. I really know nothing about other smartphones (and their required plans), any light you can shed would be appreciated.

Basically, I just want a good, reliable phone with great software and lots of tweakability. Smartphone capabilites, a camera (no matter how lousy) and cheap data are pluses I would like if possible.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide

Since the title says CDMA data, I'm thinking that you should want to go to Sprint. They offer unlimited text messaging for $15 and the data plan is only $15 also. You could also try getting the PPC. I'm not sure but last time I checked you can tether without a fee. Have you thought about Sero?

I'm not completely familiar with Verizon, but if you go out and buy a new phone without using the new for 2, and just do an ESN swap, would you be able to keep all your features? I know that Sprint can be forceful with new features, but if you go out and just purchase the new phone full-price, call them for an ESN swap, they will add the phone without screwing up your plan.
