Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I have to disagree with Bojanutan in that I though Depp was really good as Willy Wonka especially as Willy Wonka is meant to be a bit of a social reculse and so finRAB it very hard to relate to people. Thats why a few reviews have compared his character him to Michael Jackson!
I thought the Oompa Loompa's were a much better in this film than in the origianl version especially Doris the female one. I loved the whole back story of showing their world as well!
 
The film isn't set in any particular place I believe. I think its been made, so its where ever the viewer wants it to be.

Can't wait to see it. The reviews are good so far :D
 
I haven't yet seen this but reading some of the reviews on IMDB make me worried about how stupid some people are. If someone prefers the '71 version that is fair enough, but the number of people who are complaining about things like "They took out all of the original songs", or "They took out the fizzy lifting scene" just make me despair.

I love the '71 versiona nd I am fully expecting to love this one too, but why do people seem to think that this is a remake of an old film rather than a new adaption of a book. It's as much a remake as Peter Jackson's LOTR films are a remake of the old cartoon.
 
I saw this last night. Fantastic. Even though I know this is an adaptation of the book, I still couldn't help comparing it to the Gene Wilder film. Its the same but different if that makes any sense. I want to watch it again, I loved it. :)
 
The songs were the least of his problems with it (some of the songs are OK, BTW.... how can anyone dislike Candyman?).

He disliked the fact it was paid for by a chocolate company to sell their new bar, the change of emphasis from Charlie to Willy Wonka and the plot changes (the slugworth espionage plot, the burping lemonade and the contractual issue at the end)

I cant wait to see this film, loved the book and remember watching the film as a young child in the School assembley hall end of terms. It used to scare me so much, the boat ride was the worst, so freaky and in the tunnel on the screen they show a chickens head getting chopped off. How f****d up is that?
 
Fizzy lifting drinks do get a mention in the book - an old Oompa-Loompa was lost while testing them - sorry business. But you're right - they just wizz past that door without going in.
 
I was always confused about the film's location. I always thought it was east European, no idea why.

I'm not going to compare the two versions either as they are both separate adaptations of the same novel.

I thought it was lifeless, Depp didn't convince me a factory owning entrepreneur as for most of the film resembled an robot struggling with the concept of family life.

The Oompa-Loompas were expanded on, showing their world and their harsh life, but played by some skinny little Mexican looking guy and reproduced to look like loaRAB. Very odd.

Typical oddball Burton fare - you either love him or hate him.

I watched this with indifference.
 
I'm not going to watch it, or take my son to watch it on principle!

There was nothing wrong with the original with Gene Wilder.......my son loves that version, and I see no reason why it couldn't have just been rereleased!

It's all about money.......and I'm not playing!

What next a remake of The Wizard of OZ? Chitty Chitty Bang Bang? Mary Poppins?
 
I can see your point but Roald Dahl hated the Gene Wilder version as they changed so much from the original book when they made that verison. This new version is loyal to the book and hardly features any songs in it apart from the ones sung by the Ooompa Looopas!
I agree with kitty_kat_uk comment that it is the same but different in a good way than the Gene Wilder version but a lot darker!
 
I didn't get preview tickets I watched by means I shouldn't really discuss on here (downloaded version from the net ;) )

The umpa lumpa's do sing each time something happens to one of the kiRAB, just like the last movie, but the songs are different to the Gene Wilder film.
 
I saw Charlie and The Chocolate Factory in the UGC in Cardiff for the welsh premiere which was the same time as the london premiere but I have not heard of any preview screening for it!
