Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

My mistake. I was sure I'd read it was the 22nd. That means I have to wait an extra week until I get some quality Johnny Depp time. :( I've heard that it's worth the wait though.
 
I know it is way to long to wait to see this film as I really cant wait. I loved the book and the film when I was a child. I cant wait to see Tim Burton's darker film version as he was quoted as saying:

"I don't want to crush people's childhood dreams, but the original film is sappy," Burton said.
"I responded to the children's book because it respected that children can be adult, and I think adults forget that."

I cant wait untill the 29th of July!
 
I just found out that I have got free tickets to a preview screening of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on Sunday in the UGC in Cardiff. So I wont have to wait 2 weeks to see this film!
 
I was never a big fan of the original film but i am looking forward to the new one as its by Tim Burton and Depp looks very funny as Wonka!!!
I think Burton may have got more of the book then the original film as the book was a lot darker which the Wilder film really was not in any way but we will just have to wait and see how it turns out!!
 
It hasn't... and the hens that laid golden eggs are now actual fully trained squirrels who crack open nuts to cue... just like in the book.
 
I saw it yesterday and it is a really good film. I was worried about comparing it too much to the original film. However this film is easily as good if not better. I dont want to say too much just in case I spoil it for other people but I will defiantly be going to see it again when it is released on the 29th!
 
I was just wondering by looking at IMDB, as some of the cast are British, is it set in Britain or America? It would be a shame if another British book was turned in an Americanised film.
 
The only bit they've added to it which isn't in the book is the reason Willy Wonka looks the way he does... it involves Christopher Lee as his dentist father. He does look pretty weird in it though I have to agree.
 
The original film almost achieves greatness, but faulters because of the horrible decision to add songs to it. It's pretty much the reason that Dahl disowned the film in the first place.

However, it's worth watching everytime just for Gene Wilder. It's such a masterful take on Wonka that it's hard to see anyone better it. The whole time you just can't get his character down, you really don't know where his head's at. One minute he's all joyful and fun, the next minute he wants to see what's going to happen to the fat kid in the tube.

It's absolutely fascinating to watch and Depp seems to have taken the character to another place entirely.

Oh and you don't have to worry about it being a remake. The screenwriter confessed that he's never seen the film before, but he did watch it after he was done with the script and he said he was surprised by 'how dark it gets'.
 
You can breathe easy - it's set in Britain. Well, as much as Dahl's book ever was - I don't think it ever actually specified where it was set. But the accents on the 'local' characters are all English in Burton's interpretation.
 
I love the original film although it has so much missing from the book. Thought the new version looks great also and I heard it is a more faithful adaptation of the book than the gene wilder one. Hopefully it is as dark as the first one.

When is it out?
 
In the film it never actually says where it is set just like in the book.However in the new film when Charlie finRAB the golden ticket a woman offers him 500 dollars for it but then the majority of the local people seem to be English!
 
He wrote a couple of kiddies books that have made better films. I've already seen Tim Burton's version and it is miles better than the book and the first film

So your doubts were very very wrong
