Characters who became worse later in a series?

That's true. Despite being a pretty significant threat during the first season, Icy, Darcy and Stormy were really weakened during the later seasons, especially season three where the girls could easily defeat them. Granted, it probably helped that they continued to get new power-up items/forms to increase their powers and they probably wanted to make the new villains stand out as being more threatening and powerful than they are, but it still make the three witches look like pretty weak villains.

Outside of the three movies and a few episodes that didn't didn't focus on Bloo that much either, I couldn't get into the show either. There was just too much focus on such an unlikable character that I didn't really enjoy the show most of the time I did watch it. I think that they made that change to add some more conflict for the show, especially since the ending to the pilot made it sound like everything was all worked out, but I think that they also could have made him more likable and made it clear that he actually liked his friends instead of just using them to get what he wants most of the time.

I'm not sure if Rigby was that likable at the start. Maybe he wasn't as cruel with ruining Mordecai's chances with Margaret like he is now, but I thought that he was still pretty selfish, ungrateful and immature from the start. I'm not sure if he's worse than Bloo in that regards since it's at least clear that he does like hanging out with Mordecai. He's just too immature and selfish to understand that Mordecai's feelings for Margaret. It probably also help that Rigby has been a jerk from the start, unlike in Bloo's case, and that I haven't been completely turned off from watching Regular Show after seeing how incredibly selfish and annoying Rigby can be like I did with Bloo.

As for Benson, I don't think he's a terrible boss. He might be yelling too much to be considered a really nice boss, but considering the amount of time Mordecai and Rigby goof off and avoid doing the work he gives them, it's kind of understandable that he would yell at them and why he doesn't treat them with respect. If they aren't going to be good employees, then I don't see why Benson should be really nice to them. Besides that, he doesn't seem to hate them, despite how they avoid most of their work. He clapped for them during that open mike night, even though they admitted that they were lip synching, wasn't mad at them for taking yet another break after they helped him get his job back and even in last week's episode, told them that they did a great job with the horror movie in the graveyard, although part of that was because they brought some people back to life as zombies by mistake, and gave them a paid day off. It sounds more like Benson actually improved as a boss, or at least in his relationship with Mordecai and Rigby, instead of getting worse to me.

I didn't think Misty was that bad to Ash. She was kind of harsh on some of his rookie mistakes, especially when she herself was barely more experienced than Ash was at the time, but she did become his friend during the course of the series and practically forgot about her old broken bike that she constantly reminded Ash about during early Kanto. As for Charizard, it did have an attitude problem that really came out of nowhere if you look back at the first season and it most likely was a way to prevent Ash from just using Charizard in all of his matches, as well as show how much of a rookie he still was. Still, its attitude did improve during the Orange Island and it actually learned to respect Ash again, so I don't see how it got worse during the series. Max actually didn't really bother me that much. I thought he was annoying during his first few appearances where he did act like he knew so much more than Ash, despite not having any experience as a trainer himself, but I don't think he was that bad at all. He was fairly likable and it was interesting to have a main character with no Pokemon of his own for once.

I do agree with you about the serious Team Rocket. The concept of the Team Rocket trio being more serious and competent sounds like an interesting idea, but I don't think that the execution works for the show. They just feel extremely dull, haven't really done anything that's more impressive than what they did as comedy relief and their one minute of screentime in each episode doesn't help to make me feel engaged in their plot. As for Iris, I actually think her attitude towards Ash is improving as they continue to travel with Cilan. I thought that she looked fairly impressed with his victory at the first Unova Gym, she did hint at how Ash would defeat her in battle when he asked her for match after her training with Axew didn't go well, even though she had constantly called him a kid during most of the previous episodes and she's been pretty supportive for Ash with offering some suggestions after his losses to Trip and Lenora. Though, most of that advice she does need to take herself given the skill of her Axew. I usually don't get too upset at Iris for calling Ash a kid, unless its about something from Unova that he obviously wouldn't know. Even though he does have quite a bit of experience under his belt, Ash certainly doesn't act like he does and I could see how that first impression of Ash might be hard for Iris to ignore. Besides that, I think it's supposed to be funny since Iris acts like a kid as well.

This thread is about characters who became worse as a series progressed; Jerry was always kind of a jerk; it's not like he just suddenly became one. As for Spike, well, dogs and cats are natural enemies, so I don't think I really have to explain that one. In Spike's defense, much of the time he's just a pawn in Jerry's revenge schemes on Tom.

Again, Angelica was a nasty brat from day 1. It's not like she was a goody two-shoes for a while and then suddenly became obnoxious out of the blue.

I disagree with both of these wholeheartedly. I don't see Rigby as jerky or insufferable; just an unleashed id, all about personal gratification first and foremost. Sure, he's had his moments of being a jerk to Mordecai, but Mordecai has likewise had his moments of being a jerk to Rigby (the episodes "Death Punchies" and "Jinx" come to mind). I'd say that the 2 of them have a fairly even give-and-take.

As for Benson, is he really such a bad boss? Or is he merely frustrated? It's not like he doesn't have the right to be constantly agitated, seeing as how nearly all of his employees or either slackers, weirdos or morons which a penchant for causing stupendous and sometimes supernatural disasters. Even the guy who's supposed to be over him (Pops) is so stupendously naive and incompetent that he requires constant supervision and instructions, and his dad, who owns the whole she-bang, is always barking at Benson and holding him responsible for his underlings' foul-ups and laziness. So you can't really blame the guy for having a burr in his saddle.

I dunno man, the same season produced Moanin' Lisa Blues, Krusty Gets Busted, and Some Enchanted Evening featuring way different renditions of the characters than this episode yet they were all consistent with each other.

While they may be in character with the shorts, that's a whole different show and universe. When writing the episode, Jean and Reiss should have paid more attention to the other episodes from the season getting written or should have had a major rewrite at some point. It's not even consistent with the season it's in.

I'm a little behind on this show, but...

Runo from Bakugan. I just saw episode 38 of New Vestroia (the one where she and Mira battle Link and Mylene and lose the energy) and I'm very disappointed in how she has been treated since the start of New Vestroia (Julie, too, but not as much). Runo was a great brawler in season 1 and had a lot to contribute to the show, and now it's like all she does is complain and fawn over/whine to Dan. In this particular episode, she wanted to join the brawlers since Tigrerra (and Gorem) don't have Haos (sp?) energy, but Baron and Ace mentioned that since Dan and friends have faced mechanical Bakugan before, they'd know how to defeat them better. So Runo wandered off to prove how good she is to Dan only to have Mira look for her and have them both ambushed by Link and Mylene... and Runo and Mira lost. Runo was knocked out first.

I'm a little disappointed that they just knocked Runo, Julie, and maybe Alice aside like this and keep leaving them out of the action (like not enabling them to travel to New Vestroia and having Link trick Alice), but Runo especially just seems to have no purpose but to get angry and ahead of herself. She even got upset when Mira was working at the restaurant.

Oh, and I'm not that far yet, so please do not spoil any episodes beyond mid-New Vestroia for me. If you must talk about them, PLEASE use a spoiler tag.

The entire cast of The Fairly OddParents?:
Timmy: went from a well meaning but sometimes mischievous kid to a lazy self absorbed slacker.
Cozmo: Went from a wacky, kind of dumb, but caring, husband to someone who was so dumb you were shocked if he was able to breath properly who constantly complained about his wife.
Wanda: Went from a wacky, kind of a straightman-ish, but caring wife into a nagging know it all who kept complaining about her husband.
The Parents: Went from really busy, but caring parents into idiots who were too dumb to live who only served to spread the message "if you have kids life's gonna suck forever".

I could keep going, but I think I'll just leave it at the main cast for now.

Yeah, I definitely agree with this. That episode you mention (during the Garlic Jr. saga) was particularly annoying because Gohan didn't want to do anything regarding fighting. They were all just having a reunion to celebrate the Turtle's birthday (I think that's what i was) and she goes on a rant about how he should never even get near them. Based on that I can't blame people for not liking her.

I also want to add Daffy Duck during the original run of Looney Tunes. A lot of the characters became worse due to the decrease in quality of the shorts during the 60s, but Daffy was the most affected. Daffy went from crazy to greedy/self-centric, and while those were all good times because the changes worked, by the 60s Daffy was simply a mean-spirited duck who was always the victim you weren't supposed to feel sorry for. by the time he was paired with Speedy Gonzales it was the point of no return.

Something I have to wonder: aren't some of these characters mean for COMEDY purposes? I mean, look at Bloo. Yes, he can be rather insufferable, but he tends to provide the conflict for comedy to occur since the other characters are usually acting against his jerkiness. As far as his 180 personality change from the pilot: um, it's a pilot. That kind of thing can happen, and I'll bet the writers realized, "Hey, Bloo's funnier as a jerk." Notice how Duchess also changed personalities somewhat in the show: in the pilot, she's truly villainous, but she's just an arrogant snob in the series proper.

Also consider that Bloo almost always gets his comeuppance for acting like a jerk.

Oh yea, Daffy is a great example of character degradation. Even before all those cruddy cartoons with Speedy, he'd changed a lot from his earlier, zany personality. I didn't even like it when he started getting into those pissing contests with Bugs all the time. Maybe I would have been okay with it if it had been less one-sided, but Bugs always got the better of him. I found it annoying even as a little kid. Those cartoons do have their moments, but I'm a MUCH bigger fan of Tex Avery's crazy Daffy. :daffy:

Of course, keep in mind that the "Homer pawns the TV" episode was the fourth Simpsons episode in production. Basically, the show was still expanding the world of Springfield at this point, and it would be another episode or two (most specifically, Moaning Lisa) before we get the first major "character" shift from Tracey Ullman shorts era to Simpsons TV series era (and before someone points out the Xmas episode, that was the 8th episode in the show's production).

Only twice has Lois received comeuppance for her being a jackass.

Joyce got back at her for humiliating her in high school, by revealing that Lois starred in a porn film (making her a pariah).

Meg called her out and MADE LOIS CRY and regret her past treatment of Meg. See it here!

Her reactions showed that she can be good at heart.

I agree with your point. Tough Daffy Duck was intentionally created for be displeasant, he stays much lovable than most characters done today in features.

As point your avatar, Gargamel worth a mention, mostly in the graphic books series. In the Dupuis years, Gargamel having a big role in most of the Smurfs episodes and can appear to a entire story but in the post-Peyo episodes, he being more a comic relief since the new writers and authors used him mostly at the end of the story. That's what stop me to read a new Smurf nowadays, also with their pedagogic spirit. (The early series was much liberal with some politics references from the author's time.)

While I don't like or watch Bakugan that much I noticed in the opening for the later seasons they don't even show any female characters and that does make me upset. If the openings are any indication of the season it self I understand why people would have problems with this.

In the New Vestroia season, Mira is still a main character. The earliest opening for New Vestroia does mention her. However, she's the only main female here. However, to make up for this, she is a better brawler than Runo or Julie, gets more development than both of them combined, and is actually the leader of the Bakugan Battle Brawlers Resistance.

I don't know about Gundalian Invaders or Mechtanium Surge though.

...what? Mordecai and Rigby are perfectly equal in terms of dick moments towards each other. And Mordecai had no one but himself to blame for not showing any initiative with Margaret.

Benson has been angry and yelling at M&R since the very beginning; that's one of his key traits. His other key trait is that he's actually a great boss and decent person despite that. Did you watch "Benson Be Gone" or "Grave Sights" at all?

Yeah, I gotta agree with this. People need to stop acting as if Bloo was ever a sweetheart anywhere other than the pilot and/or as if he always escaped punishment, because he wasn't and he didn't. And it gets even worse when these same people turn around and praise/worship characters from other media who are as much of a jerkass as Bloo... apparently McCracken isn't allowed to have any jerk characters?

On the other hand, there were a couple of real derailments on Foster's. Madame Foster comes to mind immediately. She was a standard cool and badass grandma character, which I liked... then they gave her a mean streak, which in all honesty, could've worked. The thing is, I didn't see the humor of her stealing from an eight-year-old kid and ruining his and everyone else's vacation, as well as sending a bunch of defenseless imaginary friend balloons to their death... all in one episode. Then after the episode's negative reception, they hit the reset button and Madame went back to her saintly self, but honestly, I couldn't buy it anymore.

Then there's Goo. I (and many others) liked her a lot in her first appearance, so unsurprisingly, they bring her back for more appearances. Not only that, but she becomes a semi-regular character. Should've been cool, right? Too bad they stripped out her likable qualities and made her more pushy and arrogant. Again, that could've worked... except they made her not only a jerk, but a Jerk Sue who always came in with flawless solutions for everyone else's problems and never had anything go comically wrong for her, which was a huge mistake considering how the show depends on it's characters enduring Murphy's Law for it's humor. Apparently the writers agreed, because Goo was demoted and made only two minor appearances in the last two seasons (one of them in the finale).

I don't seem to recall Goo acting like a jerk. And didn't her imagining those villains in "Make Believe It or Not" go comically wrong? I really didn't see that much wrong with her besides her annoyingly rapid speech.

I'm not sure if I would call Bloo a sweetheart even in the pilot, but he was more likable and much less annoying to me. I'm aware that he almost always got some punishment for being such a jerk, but that didn't make him enjoyable to watch or make his whole attitude less annoying to me. Some characters who are jerks can be kind of likable or have some nice qualities to their personalities that make them fun to watch. I don't think Bloo really had any qualities during the series that made me like him. When I did watch the show, I just wondered why Mac and the other friends at Fosters would even bother dealing with him, let alone be his friends.

Well, for me ? U may have to make a topic named : Series became worse later :D
Phineas and Ferb : That's for sure - Irritating characters, singing, dancing with goofy songs, songs that don't even make any sense, stupid trends, doing ovah and ovah and over ...
The Indian kid was picked for the little nerd (?), and the bully ( white boy ) always picks him up, a hidden messages was sent ( I dun want to talk )
2 two boy ~~", everyday everyday everyday, making nonsense nowhere with impossible stuff also - hidden message sent ( where do they get all of the resource ? )

The only one I can think of right now is Bane from "The Batman." In his first apperance, which was one of the few truly great episodes in Season One, he was imposing and essentially gave us an animated version of "Knightfall." Even the Batbot nearly fell before his might... and then, after he finally reappeared in Seasons 4 and 5, he was easily defeated not once, nor twice, but three times. First, he got electrocuted by Batman while trying to crush Robin and Batgirl. Then, he was defeated by Robin himself in a similar matter. And finally and most ridiculously, he was defeated when Batman picked him up with his bare hands and threw him into a pile of crates.
