Characteristics of a Civilization?

Can somebody please help me. I need an important characteristic of a civilization, and please explain why it was important.
 
agriculture--this is a source of food that you do not have to follow
fresh water source (usually a river in earlier civilizations)---you need water
 
Barter system = money and exhange. A civilization needs to have ways to trade or buy goods that they do not have themselves.
An anthropology study by Margaret Mead found women using banana leaves as money...just thought that was interesting
Also a hunter/gather system in which certain members are responsible for getting food, caring for the family and such are part of a civilization.
(In some civilizations, the men were responsible for caring for the family)
