Chaperone

I am thinking of getting Chaperone because of a very problem teenager. I've exhausted other ideas and have to resort to spying. I looked into it and it said that there was no charge for the parent and child versions but when I went to sign on there was a $10 a month fee. I don't make a lot of money and that is a considerable expense but if I have to I have to. Is this true?

I will be able to download the child version on the teenagers phone and it says that I can enable the phone to always accept an inquiry as to where the child phone is but says that a text message will be sent to the child phone saying that it was accessed every time I look for her whereabouts. Is that true and is there anyway to disable that? If not then I fear that the effectiveness will be greatly diminished.

I don't like spying but recent events have told me that if I don't so she could wind up in very deep trouble, I have to balance her desire for privacy with my desire to look after her welfare.

Somehow today's standards have made parents feel guilty about being involve with their child's well being. Don't use the word 'spying' using the word "spying" puts a bag of bricks on your shoulders.

Knowing what your child is doing, going, involve with, and personal interest are...is not "SPYING" the well being of your child is not a bad thing, love is part of being a protecting parent, your intent is "CARE" and "SAFETY"

Never feel that giving up on your child is the right thing to do. Get the chaperone, fell good about doing the right thing, your child should earn his/her privacy, so put down that bag of bricks. Good luck

I had read the link you provided before I posted my original question. The cost was confusing because if you go to the site to download the Chaperone Parent and Chaperone Child it states that the cost for each is $0.00 but when you attempt to use it it says there's a $10/month fee. Thus my confusion. This used to be the Gillete razor strategy; Sell the razors cheaply or offer them for free and recoup on the blades.

When I went to find out about the programs I went through a lot of links including the one mentioned before I found a reference to the fact that the child phone would be notified via a text message even when the child phone was set to always accept the GPS locator. Looking at the CellPhoneForum I discovered that the Chaperone program has been updated and doesn't have the text message part in it according to a FCC ruling. So I'm confused about this also.

Does anyone have any experience with using this product? I'd be happy to hear from them.
Thank you

Chaperone Explained:

Required features:
Chaperone Parent= $0.00 (Downloaded to the parent device)
Chaperone Child = $9.99/mo (Downloaded to child device. Feature must be active on your account. Call customer Service)

How it works:
It uses GPS to track your child. They must be in a verizon wireless network. If they roam off the VZW network, you will not be able to track them. THe phone MUST be turned on. IF you little devil gets smart and turns the phone off you will not be able to locate them. When the chaprone child device is FIRST powerd on the child will see the follow message: "Warning: Your device may be located at anytime when your device location privacy setting is set to always allow". THey must push OK to this screen or wait a really long time for it to go away.

Tracking the child:
You can track the phone via website or parent phone. The child will see a message that says something like your device is being tracked using chaprone. However if you changed the privacy setting on the website they will not have a choice to allow or deny this. (this may have changed, but im pretty sure they still get this message).

The downside:
IF you child is smart, all they have to do is turn the phone off. No more tracking. If they are even smarter they can just delete the chaperone program from the phone. (some never phones have ability to lock the program with password, but most phones can not do this.) And if they are really smart, they can change their location setting to E911 only. (which means the phone can only be tracked via 911 operator. THis setting can sometimes be locked in the restriction menu via a password.)

I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions

Thanks very much for your help. It looks like she will get a text message from what you say which will defeat the purpose of effective tracking. So she can just turn off the phone at that point.
This morning I saw that there is a new section on the VW website called Usage Controls. I looked at it and at $4.99 a month it seemed that it might be a useful tool especially the one restricting phone numbers that can be dialed or received. Exploring further I found out that I had to switch from my present plan (AMERICA'S CHOICE II FAMILYSHARE) at $60/month ( I usually pay around $80 on average after all the taxes, add-ons, etc) to a "supported Nationwide Plan". I'm not sure what nationwide plan that means but I decided to try and sign up for Usage Controls and it said I couldn't because I needed a Nationwide Calling Plan with Megabyte Data. I couldn't find any plan that had those words. The minimum Nationwide plan started at $80 which with the additional fees might bring it up to around $100. The plan with Megabyte data sounds more expensive. Thus it looks like the $4.99/month for Usage Controls will be considerably more.

I don't need these Nationwide plans as evidenced by the fact that my phone bill every month for a few years has always been around the same $80/month.

Verizon needs to correct a couple minor flaws in the service, primarily with the software before it's worth the $10 a month.
First they need to rid of the ability for the search to be cancelled on the "child" phone. Second, they need to give the "parent" ability to lock the software on the "child" phone, much like the way THEY (verizon) lock THEIR "visual voice mail" software on MY phone. I haven't actually talked to Verizon about my concerns but have read numerous postings and it appears I'm not alone in my concerns.
I've had the service for one day and might keep it a few more but if I can't find a work around or get some good logical answers from Verizon as to why they can't fix this issues then I will cancel my subscription...
Hmmm, I wonder if AT&T or Nextel has similar services....

Nextel doesn't.

AT&T does but it's put out by the same publisher and is IDENTICAL to Verizon's in every way. The only difference is it is more of a blue style and it says AT&T.

Thanks for the comments. Anyone have answer to the rest of post?
Hi..I just downloaded the chaperone from verizon and i really like it. it cost 10 a month and how it works is .........you have to download the app on ur phone and the app on their phone and register it online. you put u as the locater and them as the locatee.
Then u can see where they are anytime. you get the address and if you do it online, you can even zoom in on the house and see it, even the cars in the drive way you will see online. It does not send a text message to their phone. it doesnt vibrate or alarm. what it does is........it will flash words across front screen very quickly. and they would never no it if they wasnt starring at it. I have had mine on for a week so far and they are not aware of it. the down fall about the whole deal is....if they power their phone off and turn it back on. they will have a media warning on it that says if you dont want to be located then you need to take it off of always allow. that is the bad thing. but so far that hasnt happened with me. i am just hopin to at least get a good month use out of it with out them knowing it. then i will have a good idea of what they been up to. it is worth the risk. trust me!
