Channels that need to go

All credits go to this post:

Anyway the channels that need to go are:

Sky3
Every timeshift channel
MTV Shows
All the shopping channels
ITV2
Bravo2
All the "religous" channels
The ocean finance channel
Channel One (formerly Virgin1)

Why axe ITV2 but keep ITV 3 and 4? Wouldn;t it be easier to axe 4 and keep 2?

As far as what needs axing. All those babestation type channels.
i really wouldn't be bothered is they closed down about 85-90% of the channels I never watch them, look to see whats on them even when channel hopping as I use the favourites button. For all I know I could have 1,000 channels. I've never checked. lol

Channel 5, Fiver and Five USA because they are very cheap channels with a few good shows e.g. Wright Stuff and CSI but the majority of their shows on these channels are rubbish e.g Live from Studio Five.
All adult channels because I don't see the point in showing these channels any more when you have free porn on the internet?

If your basis for removing channels is that there isn't enough money to go around and that too many channels are chasing too few programs or too few advertisers, then there is absolutely no reason whatsover to axe the time shift channels.

Channel 4 + 1 does not compete with Channel 4 for the same advertisers let alone with Channel One or ITV. Channel 4 does.

Channel One +1 does not outbid anyone for the new series of Chuck. Channel One does and removing the +1 would not alter that in any way.

Similarly whilst I haven't watched it (not having sky), why would removing the Ocean Finance channel have any impact on advertisers or shows. I assume all the Ocean Finance channel shows is an advert for Ocean Finance. Basically it is a 24 hr advert for Ocean Finance and not competing with anyone for anything.

The same, I assume, could be said of the religious channels or the shopping channels which only broadcast their own shows and aren't in competition for anything. Removing GOD TV (if such a thing exists) won't suddenty make Lost show up on Channel 4 for example.

So basically from a starting point of "There are too many channels competing for limited resources such as advertisers or shows" you have just proceeded to list channels you don't like or don't watch haven't you?

ITV2 is a complete embarrassment. I watch it the odd time, for a repeat of corrie or maybe xfactor, but otherwise the channel makes my brain bleed. paris hilton, dannii minogue, jedward, the saturdays, jordan, katona. i mean what do u need to be to get your own show? maybe i should apply for one ...

None - while any given Channel might not show something you enjoy and may consider rubbish (after all that is a polite word I could use about Big Brother - but it sells acres of newspapers and is worth a tonne of free publicity for C4) there are people who do enjoy them.

The whole advantage (if there is one) of a multi-channel world is that it caters for minorities and minority interests

I think Sky should do as it pleases - it's a private subscription service that operates on its own equipment (I see no reason why there should be content or advertising restrictions either).

As for free to air television, which should be regulated, what I'd do is allow the five main broadcasters to have two extra channels, which brings the total number to fifteen, which is quite enough for the limited audience. The extra bandwidth from scrapping the shite could be used to allow more HD broadcasting on the fifteen channels.

Ratings would still be low but they'd be better than they are currently.

That may be, but it does question the mental state of the human race. Most of their schedule IS bull. Catchup and sister shows from ITV1, the odd film, and horrid fly-on-the-wall documentaries with highly-acclaimed stars such as Jedward and Katie Price...

You could safely chop the "Comedy ..." channels including the +1's down to one single channel - none of them have shown anything new this year.
The Discovery channels, too - for the same reason
and Bravo - again, merely old stuff repeated again and again and again
oh yeah, Dave as well. (I forgot about that. an easy thing to do)
Axe ITV2+1
Five, fiver, fiver+1 and Five USA should merge/disappear into 1 single channel
Virgin / Channel One - seriously: what's the point?
Does anybody ever watch Watch - die!
Let's make HISTORY, history
We could safely lose the Syfy channel - no-one would notice
Sky 2 and 3 can go too. They're only repeats of Sky1 - sometimes in a different order.
"Home" should go there
I can't say anything about Living, because in 10 years of having Sky, I've never felt the urge to ever watch it.

ITV 2 and ITV2+1
MTV Shows
Living TV
that ocean finance one
E4
4Music - The Hits was much better, that should be brought back
All the dating/chat channels
Most shopping channels
Religious ones

Ok, yes there are a lot of channels, but I would keep the +1 - I have frequently used them when I am busy doing / watching something else at the original broadcast time, so foe me, they are valuable, and as I understand it, they do not compete for ad revenue or programmes, they are just a timeshift repeat.

Now, as to the other channels: I could easily get rid of at least 50 channels without losing any of the variety.

Can't see the point of:
Comedy Central - all varieties (3)
Hallmark
Alibi
DMAX
CBS - All varieties (3)
Film 24
FX
Information TV
Quest
Current
BEN
AIT International
Open Access (3)
BET
Propeller
Showcase (2)
Sumo
Vox
Home
Discovery Channels - get them rationalised down to just one
Wedding TV
Africa Channel
Diva
Horse & Country ( !!!! wtf??? )
Body in Balance ( I mean ??? Wt FFFF???? )
Fitness TV
True Movies
Movies 4 Men
Movies 24
Keep MTV and VH1, get rid of the rest
National Geo - as with Discovery, combine into 1 channel
Eden/BLighty/Yesterday - combine into 1

Kids - I don't have young kids, so never watch them and couldn't begin to comment, but there seem far too many.

Adult channels etc - don't watch, but son't see any problem with them.

The free market will decide which channels go or stay. if they make money then they're not going anywhere.

Otherwise, we may as invite the Taliban over to decide what we watch - i.e. anything that offends a miniscule number of people is banned.
