Changing Your Mind.

It's amazing how your opinion of things change over the years. Cartoons are no different. So, I have three questions:

1. What are some cartoons that you liked as a kid, but no longer enjoy?
2. Which cartoons do you continue to enjoy, but not as much?
3. What are some cartoons that you like more now than back then?

My Answer:

1) Pinky and The Brain. I loved it as a kid, but when Toon Disney began airing it a year ago I checked it out since I hadn't seen the show in a couple of years. It didn't work for me. The weird thing though is that I still love their segments on Animaniacs. So, I guess this is just a situation where I feel like the 30 min format didn't work.

2) The `94 FOX Kids Spider-Man series. There's a lot of things that I continue to enjoy about this show, but also feel that it kinda ignored what made Spider-Man great in the first place. It didn't show Peter Parker dealing with everyday problems. Yea, we get the Aunt May is sick stuff and the women problems, but what about Peter struggling to hold a job or falling back in his classes?

3) This may sound weird, but Batman: The Animated Series. I loved that show as a kid, but because of Ninja Turtles and Power Rangers I didn't really realize it's true greatness. Now I do.

-Voltron. And here is my reason. -Spider-Man: The Animated Series is one of these. While still a good interpretation of the mythos of Spider-Man, the realisation of how terrible the animation, how stilted the dialogue, and how needlessly censored was the show that it makes me like it a wee bit less than I did.
-Transformers. I realised how deeply silly this series was.
-G.I. Joe. Same here, although in terms of storytelling it one-upped Transformers ten-fold.
-Ditto to Thundercats.
-To some extent Teen Titans. I've just realised that this was such a good show that always felt like it was being held back... and eventually castrated.
-The DCAU. Such wonderful products of storytelling.
-Animaniacs. If only because now I've begun to appreciate the rather deep jokes sandwiched with the ribald slapstick comedy.
-Same with Pinky and the Brain.
-Ditto to Freakazoid.
-Lucky Star... Yeah it may be new, but I kindof grow more appreciative of it. I like to call it the Azumanga Daioh effect (where I thought the aforementioned show was not that great, but it grew on me).

I will have to say the Magic School Bus. I used to be so obcessed with this show. Its still educational for younger kids but the dialog seems corny to me.

I think I liked Spongebob a little it more 8 or 9 years ago. Now its just there's overkill of it.

Do movies count? Because I wll have to say Bambi. It was always alright but then I saw it a few years and thought it was fantastic. Same with Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Wacky Races and Laff-A-Lympics. I loved these shows as a kid, but seeing them again years later, they're both really repetitious; if you've seen one episode, you've seen them all. Also,

The Shirt Tales. Back in the 80's I thought this show was uber-cool. Looking at it again, I can't believe that I never noticed what blatant toy-based tie-in this show was. It was basically Care Bears except that they had words printed on their chests instead of symbols.

X-Men: TAS (the Fox version)-Back in the 90's, I was a regular X-Men disciple. Watching it again, it's not a terrible show, but the piss-poor animation really didn't age well.

Teen Titans-This series was definitely more fun the first time around. The watering down of the overall premise and characters is all too obvious to me, though some elements like Starfire and Robin are still OK. Promising idea, weak execution.

Sam & Max: Freelance Police. I always dug this show, but now that I've purchased the DVD and am able to watch it at my leisure, I'm able to catch the jokes that flew past me the first time, so I can better appreciate what a gem this all too short-lived show was.

Also, Looney Tunes and Jay Ward's shows. Again, much of the humor flew over my head as a kid. These are much more enjoyable now.

I'm still a kid now (19), but I'll post anyway.

Rugrats: I used to love this show as a little kid. It was the first show that I really got into, I enjoyed every moment, including the later seasons. Now that I watch it now, I find the show to be somewhat bland (the later seasons). It seems as if they started to overexaggerate the subtleties that made the show cool, like the babies poor speaking skills, Phil and Lil being disgusting.. it seemed somewhat forced. The early seasons are still fairly enjoyable, but the show as a whole doesn't really appeal to me anymore, the show in its entirety is somewhat disappointing. I was very easy to please when I was a little kid.

Pok?mon: This fad hit my school when I was in fourth grade. Everyone was into it. The cards, the games, and the show. I loved the games, collected tons of cards, and even video taped the show. I watched almost all of season 1. Now, after watching the show recently, it feels kind of... lame. I'm not really sure what I saw in the show, other than it being a TV series based off a really fun game. Yes I still think the game is fun, but the show comes off as corny to me.

Catdog: I used to enjoy Catdog back in the day, but that was before I realized how detestable most of the characters were. Now adays, I find Cat to be the most likeable character on the show, but that fact that he loses almost every single episode really irritates me. I liked dog when I was younger, now I find him very annoying.

Spongebob Squarepants: I remember the very first day it aired. I was a huge fan right away. I watched it all the time, even with my parents. I loved the quirkiness. I don't know if anything changed content wise that would make me not enjoy it as much. However, the constant reairing of the show is really not doing me any favors. After seeing the same episodes over and over and over and over again, it's just getting old. I still enjoy the show, but not as much as I used to. It used to be a big favorite.

Hey Arnold: This used to be another show I hated to miss. Catchy tunes, quirky characters, really cool stories. However, as a kid, I really missed out on a lot of problems that I am much more aware of today. I really can tell how much the voices changed. I do know that the cast was made up of little kids and them growing up was inevitable, but it still didn't help. The other problem was Arnold's character development. He changed from a cool kid to a Saint. Very bad character development. I still like the show, just as long as you toss of the stupid Saint Arnold episodes.

Angry Beavers: I used to love this show. I thought it was hilarious, and I liked the whole movie aspect. Now adays I find it to be merely amusing. I'm not really sure what else to say about it. I think this is another case of kid no longer being easy to please. I do like this show and will watch it no problem.

Rocko's Modern Life: I used to be a fan of this show. It had a wacky charm to it, however, I really didn't get a lot of the show. I wasnt totally into absurd humor. Now, I get everything and I love absurdity in humor (Rocko was so absurd). This one is easily in my top 3 cartoons of all time.

Animaniacs: I watched this show when I was little but it was never the kind of show I looked forward to all the time. I thought it was amusing, but a lot of the writing went right over my head. Now I can easily understand the clever writing/jokes and I've grown to like wacky humor over the years. Also, it feels as if the music is a lot more enjoyable now then back in the old days.

Powerpuff Girls: If I was in the living room and this show came on, I would watch it and enjoy it. I'd never make a point to watch it cause I was a little boy and it was a show about little girls. I pretty much tried not to like it. Now that I'm old (not really), the whole "show starring little girls" thing doesn't phase me in a slightest. I can focus my attention on the quality of the show without dwelling on how I'm gonna get cooties. Another favorite.

Invader Zim: I'm aware this show is somewhat recent, but it was on when I was 12 so I'll say that was when I was a kid. I remember when it first came on, I watched a couple of episodes and I certainly didn't find it appealing, at all. It was somewhat amusing but I quickly forgot about it. Seven years later, after reading about its insane internet cult fan base, I decided to give it another whirl. After watching it through, I find that I really love the style, the art, the humor and the absurd, but sometimes clever writing. I also really like how Zim was voiced. Definitely a great show.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show - Used to watch this everyday when it was on. Picked up the first DVD release a few years back and thought it was one of the worst cartoons I'd ever seen. I couldn't even finish it.

Voltron - Another childhood favorite, but I bought the "Volume 1" DVD when it came out and, again, couldn't even finish it. I only barely made it through a handful of episodes. Perhaps the dislike I have nowadays for Anime prevented me from enjoying it.

Spider-Man (60s series) - Watched reruns of it all the time when I was little. Can't stand it now.

X-Men: The Animated Series - As Silverstar said, it's not terrible, but I don't think it's aged quite so well, though it still has its moments, and I'd probably still pick it up if it ever comes out on DVD, at least the early seasons that I remember.

G.I. Joe - I suppose. Nowadays I can see that the animation is not quite as good as I remember it, but I still enjoy watching it and think there's some really good episodes mixed in with the bad ones.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - I still really like the five-part premiere and have it on DVD. I also still like a lot of the early episodes, but nowadays I just can't sit through more than a couple episodes at a time, and the animation sometimes looks iffy nowadays.

Batman: The Animated Series - I loved this show when I was a kid and watched it all the time. By the late-90s, though, I started seeing it less and less, and it wasn't until the DVD sets started coming out that I really saw it again. It was amazing to see it with almost "fresh eyes" and discover that it was still an amazing show. Now that I'm older, I have an even greater appreciation for the level of darkness and maturity it has, which I wasn't always aware of at the time as a fourteen year old.

Spongebob Squarepants - Okay, not necessarily from "back then." But by the time this show was barely a year old, I was already sick of hearing about it. But within the last year or so, I've come around and now think it's one of the funniest things I've seen in awhile. I don't watch it regularly, but if there's nothing else on or my brother's watching, I'll check it out.
