In a few months as long as the stars align i will be looking to upgrade my ride from the 1200 sportster to a streetglide, i will be buying used im sure to save a couple of pennies, but the question i had is what year should i be looking at, for instance when i went to by the sportster i knew i did not want anything older than a 2004 since in 04 is when they did the rubber mounted engines, have they done anything similar to the street glide that i should be aware of? thanks in advance.

The changes at the 2008 model year are worth noting...

1...Brembo brakes...much, much better brakes
2...available ABS braking...a much safer bike
3...6 gallon tank...longer range
4...cush drive..smoother transitions at shift
5...96 ci engine instead of 88
6...6 speed tranny...really nice on the interstate

Major changes to frame, Handles much better. Bigger tires, saddle bags hold more, no rail over the top of the fender.

I can't tell much difference that the frame makes...between my 2008 and 2011 Street Glide...

The big jump in functionality was 2008.

I do like the 103 in my 2011.

A completely new frame... More pay load, much better handling, ridged, this was, in my opinion, more important upgrade than the 96 cu-in engine. As far as the 2011... the 103 is an option... stock is still 96.

I personally would go with the 2009 or newer.

Unless you have saved some money for sure go 08 and up, but like me I got rid of of my 06 sporty and went to an 06 SG. They handle totally different it took me a good week or so to get used to the weight and fairing. Compared to the sporty this is a cadillac and I'm sure the 08 and newer are like the rolls royce. I found a good deal far less than an 08+ and enjoy it emensly. Good luck you will enjoy the upgrade either way u go.

Biggest diff. between my 06 Heritage an the SG was probably in the Heritage you sat in it! The SG you sit on it! The 96 over the 88 was also a little different! Great bike!!!!!!!

09 OR NEWER DEFINITELY. Rumor has it there were over 500 changes between 08 and 09. Don't know but I really like my 09 and can't imagine anything better - of course I'd always had soft tails until now and I would think any year SG would impress you over you Sportster - and that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with Sportsters because I owned 3 and loved them but I was younger.
