chainless bicycle question?

To my knowledge, there was a motorcycle built that way (expensive one for novelty)

No one go into business for losing money?

The current design practice still the most competitive/practical
 
I'm wondering if it would be possible to use a shaft drive transmission systems with a single speed (freewheel mechanism) or a fixed gear bicycle. If so there would be no need for a internal hub in the back wheel correct?
 
It's possible, but you'd still probably put the free-wheel ratchet
in the back. it's the best mechanical solution. It would mate
well with the required spur gear.
 
Every drive shaft bicycle I have ever seen or heard of has needed an internal hub to translate the movement.
I saw my first one in the 1950's and Trek is making one now.
