I have Fibromyologa and was on Celebrex for years.
For that specific condition it did work for me. I am not a Doctor but I have to say that I never heard that DR puts a patient on Celebrex after surgery like yours. Usually they give us Pain meRAB, narco style. But of course everybody is different, I don't know your case, but you can do some research on Internet and also talk to your Doctor about it.

Hello 4ever. I suffer from multiple back issues, my worst problem is with pain in the thoracic region. I was placed on Celebrex to help with what they consider to be arthritis in spine ( I personally disagree with this diagnosis). I took the medication for less than two weeks, it elevated my blood pressure, and I eventually broke out in a hive type rash and swelling of the face from it, and had to discontinue use. As far as anti inflammitories, it is much easier on the stomach than ibuprophen or naproxen, but be careful, especially in the first month you start on it. I hope you have better luck with it than I had, other anti inflammitories have not helped my situation either.

I've been taking Celebrex ever since it was approved - late nineties I think - and I've found it to be the best NSAID I've ever tried...and I've tried nearly all of them in the last fifteen years. I still have some stomach upset, and I have to quit taking it for about three days every few weeks...but when I quit my arthritis in my back will start flaring up again. I've also had urinary problems with this med, another reason I quit taking it periodically. It's not perfect, but I don't think any NSAID is or ever will be...but it does work for me. Hi, I had a micro discectomy on 5-01-08 it's been almost two months and the pain is still with me, I don't have the muscle spasms as bad but the shooting, burning leg pain is still there. The doctor gave me celebrex to try this time around, also gave me a steroid shot. Have any of you taken celebrex and did it help you? I also take a muscle relaxer at night only, zanaflex. I go back to see her July 29th, I'm afraid I'm just going to have to deal with the pain forever.

Celebrex does wonders....or did for me. I have been on it for 3 or 4 years though and it is starting to not work as well...for a very long time it gave me wonderful relief.
 
I took celebrex for a year but had to stop because it caused high blood pressure. It really didn't help with my leg pain. I now take neurontin (gabapentin) for the treatment of nerve pain.

I take celebrex in addition to lyrica which was given to me after a fusion surgery I had in January. It is used in an attempt to control inflammation. Your doc is thinking that there is still inflammation from your surgery that may be causing swollen tissue to press on the nerve/s, and she's hoping the celebrex will allieviate the swelling and thus, get rid of the nerve pain you are still experiencing.

It's worth a try.
 
Celebrex is an NSAID, similar to Ibuprofen or Naproxen. The difference is that Celebrex is easier on your stomach, so it's preferred for long term use. My pain management doctor had me try it for a while, but it didn't do much for me. At $55 per 30 pill prescription, I asked him if I wouldn't be just as well off with over-the-counter ibuprofen, as I was mainly to take it during flareups.

The pain you're describing sounRAB more like nerve pain. There are meRAB especially for that, like Neurontin. You might want to ask your doctor if he thinks one of those meRAB would be appropriate for you.

Celebrex is not indicated for nerve pain. It might work on nerve pain indirectly by keeping tissues from being inflammed. When inflamed, they swell in size and can put pressure on nerve endings and nerve roots, resulting in pain. This is how it works for arthritis of the spine, for instance. Lyrica and neurontin are the two drugs that are most commonly prescribed for nerve pain, as others have already said.
 
Hey Sophie, I am reading your old posts and it really seems like we are and have experienced the same thing. I am L5 S-1 and I as well have be on Celebrex for 4-5 years. I must have had 15 injections over a few years, and then finally had an out patient decompression two years ago and then on 10/1 micro D. Celebrex worked wonders for me as well. The injections were great but only temporary, and the decompression was great, as I am still pain free on the left side of L5- S-1
