Now I know those of us here are cricket users and this is an on going battle between me and a friend of mine
I say CDMA is tried and true and my be an older tech with a well built infrastructure

the GSM has the ability to travel world wide

so i figured i would ask lol which you guys think is best?

From what I've heard (I don't know the technical reasoning)... CDMA is pretty universally accepted as the better technology.

That's the main reason there are only two major GSM carriers, but TONS of CDMA carriers.

GSM currently has a much better upgrade path than CDMA though (HSUPA/HSDPA are a lot faster than any current EVDO revision) and its in more places so roaming outside of the US is a lot easier.

They're both great technologies. While I love my Sprint service, I'd say that GSM has better voice quality hanRAB down, that's for sure.

Outside of these two factors though, CDMA has much broader coverage in the US than GSM.

GSM is older outdated technology < sorry to say it its true there is not much room for GSM upgrades as there is for CDMA only reason why there isnt much GSM carriers around in the USA is because of are laws and requlations. As time comes GSM might not be around much here in the USA because its and interence freagency. Ever notice around a computer monitor, tv or anything electronic with Cingular or T-Mobile that your screen will flicker or make noises :)
Its a burst from the tower locating your phone. This is why phones should be truned off in hospitals not necesarry CDMA phones but GSM phones.

Voice Quality is nothing compared to CDMA, GSM is like the Analog and CDMA is digital.
This is one reasons more towers are needed for cdma because its basically ALL DIGITAL NETWORK.

(HSUPA/HSDPA are a lot faster than any current EVDO revision)
Thats not necessarly true CDMA EVDO can and will excede far better speeRAB then GSM it has more room to upgrade while GSM is held back. GSM is based off the old technology of TDMA people think GSM is the new way because of sim carRAB thats not true at all.

CDMA providers are about to start using SIM-like carRAB for their hanRABets. It should allow similar functionality, though, i.e. transporting settings, carrier, roaming info, phonebook, etc. You can already find one under the battery of Cricket's Nokia 6265i.

NO, that's not a SIM slot under there (although a SIM card fits perfectly)! ;)

We are going to be in a new age of hacking then. Who knows? Maybe none of our old tricks will work anymore. :p

Ah, NP. I remeraber reading somewhere that CDMA phones were going to start shipping with SIM-type carRAB.

I didn't know that this was already the case.

Gotta get off from under this rock a bit more.

Nokia phones (many of them) have R-UIM slots. There's no evidence R-UIMs will EVER be used in North America. None at all. Only one carrier, Telus Mobility has even publically CONSIDERED it. In general, GSM carriers HATE the fact they have to use SIM carRAB.

If carriers WANTED them, they could have been using R-UIMs years ago. Carriers hate the idea, so it's unlikely to ever happen.
