CDMA + UMTS is it possible?

Here's my deal, I'm going to visit Japan in a few months, and it's time for a new phone. I have both Verizon(primary) and Cingular(secondary) providers and my VX8300 while, by far, the best phone I have ever had, only supports CDMA/PCS which would pose problems on Japan's UMTS 2100 network.(Does Japan support CDMA? I've heard rumors.) So I decided it's time for a new phone.

What I would like is a phone that I can use on both VZW and Cingular networks that supports CDMA, GSM, and UMTS. (Will WCDMA phones work on CDMA networks? Cause that would make it hella easier to find one.)

Basically I need this: A phone that operates on standard CDMA and UMTS 2100. I need it to work on Verizon, Cingular is plus but not a necessity. Price doesn't matter, but I'd prefer reasonable. LG is prefered, Moto is also welcome...anything but Kyocera. I was looking at the Palm Treo 750, but I don't know if the WCDMA technology will work with Verizon. Help, PLEASE!!

There is no such phone. Your best bet would be to buy an unlocked GSM phone that supports 2100 UMTS and use your Cingular SIM in there.

Vodaphone BB 8707 supposedly works in Japan. I suggest you do a search here and see what you come up with. There have been many threads about cell phones usage in Japan. I do know that their network is much different from the rest of the world (WCDMA vs CDMA and GSM elsewhere). In many cases, only a Japanese phone will work. Your best option, both utility and cost wise, might be to rent a phone for your use while there.

http://plusd.itmedia.co.jp/mobile/articles/0504/18/news064.html Such a thing actually exists. It may be the only one of its kind, but it's there. It may be hard to get it activated on Verizon because it's a foreign phone, though.

(Edited because the way I first worded this post may have been offensive to the person I quoted)

I've heard lots of stories of people getting their Korean phones on Verizon (never Sprint, though) although that may not be happening anymore.

As far as activation goes, under VZW's poilicy any CDMA based phone can be activated as long as it 1) works on the Verizon network and 2) has a 'legal' ESN. All I'd need to do is tell Verizon my new ESN, and I could do the rest of the activation myself. (I know all the rest of the information regarding SID, NAM, etc.)

I think I found a phone that works on CDMA 2000 1x/EvDO and HSDPA networks. 3Gtoday.com says it works on UMTS networks as well, but I've been searching for the past hour and cannot find ANY information on whether or not it works on UMTS 2100 bands. The phone I'm looking at is a Samsung SCH-W200. Does anyone have any idea where I could get one? eBay is useless for this one, the SCH-W2100, and the LG KH1000. I'm pissed that I can't get any info on them, and especially that I can't find them ANYWHERE.

Thanks for the link yangj08!

I talked with tech support, it costs $30 like any other phone, but they will activate it as long as it meets those two requirements.

I still have had NO luck finding a SCH-W200 or Sch-W2100...anyone know of where to find one?

The phone was mainly sold in Korea so your best bet is to find someone who can buy one from a Korean auction site. If you can't find the SCH-W200 try looking for a SCH-W120 like I linked.
