Catholic Spanish wedding traditions, groom's mother in black?

I was visiting Spain, Salamanca to be exact... I happen to be visiting a church, and there was a wedding taking place. It was a beautiful ceremony, the bride and groom were at the altar, but what was odd, the groom's mother was sitting on his other side wearing black, and a black pointy hat with a black veil over her face.. I've tried researching this as a catholic tradition or Spanish wedding, but no such luck.. Anybody know what I'm talking about?
actually Spanish are European, Hispanics tend to be Latin-American.. so I've been told.
 
Yep. She's losing her baby boy....the pride and joy of a Hispanic mother.
