I found a caterpillar in my garden the other day. I happened to notice that this caterpillar had about 25 white things on its back. They resembled tiny grains of rice. Does anyone know what it could be?

If it was a green caterpillar eating your tomato plants, it could be a tomato hornworm.

The "grains of rice" are eggs attached by parasitic wasps.

Little white "grains" on a caterpillar are likely to be the larvae of parasitic wasps. They will eventually kill the caterpillar. See the image at the link below.
