cat likes to lounge in the litter box, WTF!?

The only cat we have, which we babysit every 2 years for 9 months, has this thing he does where he likes to just lounge around in his litter box. With the cat excrement and urine clumps in there. Then he begs to sleep with me in my bed..... Now, I'm 30 years old and haven't had a girlfriend in 3 years, or a job in a year (but they also don't know my net worth, and I don't share it), so I appear to be a deadbeat - but none the less, what's the deal with the cat sleeping in the freakin' litter box? And then he wants to sleep with me! Last time (3 years ago) we took care of him I jjust downsized his litterbox to about 12'' X 12", too small for him to lay on. It was actually hilarious to watch him perch his paws up on the edges of the box and hover his butt over the litter. I kinda felt bad, but hey, it solved the problem. I'm getting ready to go back to this draconian method, but does anyone else know of another method? -john in Iowa

Thats funny! I guess you have to make sure to keep the litter box extra clean :) Just get the wet wipe cloths and wipe him off when he comes to bed to sleep with you.

A litter box for a cat is territory.
If you have ever walked a dog, you might notice patterns in where they pee or poop. Or you might notice them sniffing certain areas and avoiding them, because it's another dogs territory.

I'm not entirely sure about how to get him to stop, but I'm sure you can make him smell better or make it more "sanitary" for you and him by cleaning it often, and changing the litter frequently.

Good luck, John!

Cats still retain some of their "wildness" despite the fact that they have become domestic. Part of this includes their affinity to lay and roll in dirt or sand. This is perfectly normal, and should be expected. No caring person would punish a cat for doing this. If the thought of him being in the litter box then coming to you is bothersome, just make sure his litter box is clean ALL OF THE TIME. There should never be a time where the box has more than one or two used spots.

"Downsizing" his box to a square foot is not only impractical, it is cruel. How you find this funny is bizarre to me?! He needs a decent sized, clean litter box that is cleaned in the morning and again at night.

If it bothers you that he comes to sleep with you shortly after his "visits", simply let him sleep OUTSIDE of your covers. You really have nothing to worry about though because cats are extremely clean animals.

Try using a good clumping litter. This makes cleaning the box so easy and removes ALL the urine and feces clumps in a couple of minutes. This way the box will always be clean and you will be less likely to be bothered by him laying in it.

If it still bothers you for whatever reason, that he lays in the litter box, then simply take him out of it when you see him and say "no" in a very calm way. Eventually he will connect the two and stop doing it. But quite honestly, you should learn to accept that part about him, and if you can't, maybe he should be going to another babysitter.

He's a cat! He doesn't care about your gf's and net worth..not sure why you added that :P

I suggest you get a larger kitty litter box, but instead of sand or kitty litter stuff, put in small pebbles. You can buy them at the pet store, you can even use the stuff people put in their fish tanks. He just likes the texture and the comfort of his litter box, but by putting in pebbles you're ensuring that he won't "go" in that particular box. Keep the one you have, but put the new one somewhere he likes to Lounge (other than the spot where his current box is) He may switch his habits and find he likes the new one better since it's bigger
