Casino Royale (2006)

NEARLY ruined by the cut-throat editing
but watching it again a while ago i found myself enjoying it more

NOWHERE NEAR casino royale's brilliance

CR seemed to take Bond back to what the original books were about, something the 21 films to date had almost ignored.

In CR he seemed more of an actual spy and had to do some spy work and this seemed like a great direction to go in. Just like in the books he was betrayed by Vespa which is why he treated women the way he did.

In QoS they seemed to ignore all the above and just go from one scene to another with a few chases and explosions before killing the guy they were going to kill in the first scene

I reckon its best to treat QOS as a coda to Casino Royale.
Daniel Craig's performance was great, he was let down by a lacklustre villain and poor editing. He is aware of this as much as anyone though, hence why he wants Sam Mendes to direct Bond 23.

Edit: And Craig WILL be back. The financial success of his films will ensure this.

It won't be the end of Bond - we can be sure of this. I didnt know he wanted Sam Mendes though.
I heard there will be a new DVD of Quantum that may contain the original ending that was cut from the release version... whether this makes things better I dont know.

CR really does polarise opinion, but for the record, as a James Bond fan of both worRAB and pictures, I love them all. Each film brings something different to the table (yes, yes some of the plans to take over the world are very similar orchestrated by similar baddies or they rely to much on space borne weapons) as does each actor.

Yes, I read that. Apparently a final scene between Bond and Mr White. I think it was left out so Bond 23 could either continue with the Quantum organisation story, or start afresh.

Dai113371 - I'm with you. Big fan of both books and films, from a very early age. The Bond films have lasted because of the great variety of actors and stories. I think theres room for all of them.

I notice the trailer for Knight and Day makes a big thing about the scene where Diaz and Cruise are on a motorcycle. Obviously the director must have watched Tomorrow Never Dies.

I love that final scene in CR - notice he only wounRAB Mr. White instead of being so rash and killing him. And it's neat having the famous enterance line at the END of the movie:
"The name's Bond, James Bond"

Not all all.
The announcement that Bond 23 has officially been cancelled will mean that any contract with Craig will now be void so that financial arrangements to keep him free will end to allow him to move on to other films.
He will have been on some kind of payment as a retainer but with the future far from certain there's no way they could keep paying him for nothing.

Whether he returns will depend many things.
If the gap is more than 3 or 4 years I doubt Craig will want to return nor will the producers want him.

I thought the film was going to miss out on that completely. Quantum of Solace did, but then I tend to think of the CR and QoS as the same story in 2 movies so technically it didn't.

For a long time, I was a little peeved that they messed with the formiula of the previous 20 fillms when they made CR, even though I knew it was a reboot. I wanted the traditional Gun Barrel beginning, that was gone. I wanted the Bond James Bond line... they saved that to the very end. I wanted Q Branch. That was gone. Where was MoneyPenny? Those were key elements, though some were glad they were gone, i'd come to expect from Bond Films.

Having said that having the gun barrel at the end of QoS to end the story was a nice touch and I wonder if this is the way it's going to go from now on. :)

I thought it was refreshing not having Q, I mean Q isnt Dr. No is he? It was good to see how he got on without gadgets in CR, IMO :) And sometimes he looked in genuine danger.
Doesnt Craig shoot the screen red at the start of CR?
Interestingly
there's a similar type scene in Spellbound (the Hitch film) at the very end!

Yea and as cool as that was, its not the same is it? I guess i'm just a Bond traditionalist living in the past. :D

The gadgets were always fun though and saved Bond's life every time.

Q himself once said, "if it hadn't been for Q Branch you'd have been dead long ago"

You're right in the sense that it was good to see how Bond got on without a Q Branch but I do miss all the gadgetry. :)

I agree, the gadgets were good fun :D It's kind of sad that he didnt trust women but
I dont blame him in a way as Vesper (the first girl he really loved?) betrayed him so that was why he became like that
:(
