Cartoons of today: will they ever be classics? (2008 edition)

TV networks don't give their products enough chance to become classic. They just throw things on the air and then pretend they never existed once they're done.

Spongebob and The Powerpuff Girls were probably the last shows that were well-treated, high-quality, and hit a wide audience, so they probably have the best chance of classic status of anything in the past ten years.

Though it was managed poorly by the network, ZIM might ironically have more of a chance if it wasn't so heavily merchandised. I've honestly met people who believe GIR is just some equivalent of Hello Kitty or any of those other mascots created to sell clothing.

Spongebob wont be considered a classic, though The Simpsons will be. My theory? The Simpsons is the longest running American cartoon AND sitcom. It will be remembered. Rugrats is already being forgotten, even though it used to be as big as Spongebob. Therefore, Spongebob will fall to the same fate.

If spinoffs count, Scooby Doo and the Flintstones easily beat the Simpsons in number of years around. If theatrical cartoons count, "Looney Tunes" more than easily trounces the Simpsons' record in number of years it lasted (in the theatrical days) and in number of shorts produced (approx. 1100)...

I would like to nominate Outlaw Star. This short lived anime series had a great plot, excellent animation, characters, and an intro and closing credits that makes it an instant classic in my book.

Also Home Movies, is an instant classic. It is a show that I could sit down and watch over and over. It never gets old.

Ed,Edd, and Eddy is another cartoon that I believe should be considered a classic.

In my opinion, there wasn't that many even remotely good animated series to choose from in the last decade.

Scooby Doo is only a classic in the limited area of American TV animation, where the good stuff is so thin on the ground that any "classics" are really just the best of a questionable bunch. If you asked a bunch of animation buffs with a wide-ranging knowledge of the subject to compile a list of animated classics, then I don't think Scooby Doo would make the cut. Amid Amidi certainly wouldn't put it on the list.
