Cartoons of today: will they ever be classics? (2008 edition)

No, it will be more like, "Hey, you know that Rocko spin-off about the monkey? What was that series called again?"

I know it wasn't technically a spin-off...

Ironically, Rocko's Modern Life seems to have a greater fan base now than it did when it was in production. Back when Rocko was in it's 4th season, I tried to start a conversation about it on the AOL cartoons Forum, and some kids called it "One retarded Nicktoon". Ugh. I guess Rocko is one of those things that you don't truly appreciate until you reach a certain age.

Defining "today's cartoons" = ones made within the past 10 years (1998-present), I also agree it's probably a short list:

- The Simpsons (yeah, "duh", I know)
- SpongeBob SquarePants (the most successful cartoon of the 2000s)
- South Park (seems like it might have legs in the future, given its longevity/cultural impact)

-B.

Well I don't know, I've been able to pinpoint a memorable character for decades from 1910 to 1990 but here in the 2000's I can't think of any character that was created in the 2000's that'll go down as memorable or classic and it dosen't help that we're in a cookie cutter era.

I'm kinda surprised at how accurate some of those guesses from the 2003 thread were.

Currently-running cartoons (or ones that ended less than a year ago) that could be considered classics in the future?

First would without a doubt be Avatar & Spongbob. The former is honestly my favorite animated series of all time, with great animation and superb writing. Throw in the popularity of both and combine that with their long runs and you've got yourself two modern classics.

The Spectacular Spider-Man, in my eyes, is set to be the next X-Men Evolution. Both shows are fantastic, but it (like Evo was) isn't insanely popular and you don't hear them talked about quite as much as shows like B:TAS.

Chowder just might end up as one given how well-recieved it's been, though only time will tell on that. At this point, I'd guess that it'll be comparable to Rocko's Modern Life in a decade or two.

American TV cartoons are being discussed here more than anything else, yes, but that's because American TV cartoons are most people's main area of interest at this forum.

I never specified format or nationality in the first post, and a couple of people have mentiond feature films. I don't know if the fellow who posted the 2003 thread meant to limit the discussion to US TV. But since the examples of past classics he named were all theatrical shorts, I think the stated implication is that American TV animation hasn't produced any classics prior to The Simpsons - nothing that'd compare to the theatrical shorts, anyway.

Critical consensus can override commercial success - yes, it rarely happens with TV series, but you could argue that that's because TV series generally don't deserve it. Besides, we're living in the age of the Internet and DVD now, and the odds of a series slipping completely through the net are much narrower - it may still flop on first broadcast, but there's a bigger than ever chance that a later researcher will come across it and, if it deserves it, bring it to the attention of the world's critics.

I still believe only ground-breaking hit characters would end up as icons. Like Spongebob Simpsons R&S or Powerpuff Girls. I'm not sure about the likes of Avatar and such... I think they are in the geek's domain and will never have a mass apeal of Spongebob or Mickey Mouse. They are of a different class.

Absolutely. The show already stands out from the rest of the past decade's fair alone, not to mention today's, and it's been a hit for nearly that long, as well. Depending on whether or not CN or AKA attempt to give it a good afterlife after the movie, I can see kids still loving it a good couple of decades plus watch it anew, with their parents watching and cherishing it again.

Personally, though, EEnE, PPG, and maybe Samurai Jack or possibly even Dexter or Chowder, depending on it's futureare the only CN originals I can see being called classics 50 years from now.

I believe that Spongebob and Simpsons will become Looney Toon level of a classic some 20+ years from now. Here are some shows that be more on level of the Hanna Barbara shows:
Pokemon
Rugrats
South Park
Family Guy
Powerpuff Girls
Dexter's Lab
Avatar
Ren & Stimpy

I think it's a safe bet to say that Cartoon Cartoons(PPG, Dexter, Bravo, Cow and Chicken, etc) will be a future gen's version of the old H&B cartoons.

I agree that Avatar and Spongebob will become classic shows in the future. Avatar is not only one of my favorite animated series of all time, but it truly had beautiful animation, great writing and wonderful character development. Besides that, it was one of the best shows Nick has ever aired. While I don't like Spongebob myself, there's no doubt of its huge popularity after going on for nearly ten years will cause it to be a classic.

Even though I've enjoyed The Spectaular Spider-Man as well, I agree that its a bit too early to call it a future classic. I do see potential for that show, but it has only aired its first season. Maybe wait a while, like a couple of more seasons, to see if it can withstand the test of time.

I think that some of CN's more recent shows could become classics, such as Chowder and Flapjack, after more time has passed and more episodes have shown their great use of humor. I don't think every CN show will become classic. I seriously doubt that Camp Lalzo or My Gym Partner's a Monkey will be remembered as classic shows in another five or ten years.

Doubtful, considering that CN doesn't even air it anymore and they only showed the final episode less than three months ago.

The TV movie will come and go and the show will fade away. It shouldn't, because it's so damn good, but it will.

I highly doubt it. See in the old days no matter how successful a particular cartoon the execs wouldn't overexpose said show. Thus even when a cartoon ended they could still do well enough with reruns since the audience wouldn't be burnt out on those shows.

Compare that to today where certain shows are ran to death, end, go to a digital network that many people don't get or simply be taken off television at all. They wouldn't get the exposure to become classics.

For Nickelodeon, Spongebob Squarepants is the only modern cartoon that I think will be considered a classic. Avatar won't be, as it wasn't terribly popular, and not really any different form any other action series we've seen before. Spongebob though, it's a giant and loved by people of all ages. Maybe Fairly Odd Parents at second place behind Spongebob.

CN's side of things, I don't think any will be aside from the DCAU stuff.

Disney's, well, maybe Kim Possible, but that's about it and iffy.

WB/Fox... hardly any kids watches those channels anymore, so I don't think so, aside maybe Yu-Gi-Oh being seen as the "00's Pokemon" but nowhere near as mainstream or popular.

Keep in mind the term 'classic' is subjective, it's not about quality or anything, just what's popular/memorable. Out of everything today, Spongebob is the only cartoon with real noteworthy popularity and hype. Anything else can be up to debate, but at best only to the fans of the show. Spongebob is the only definate answer I can see.
