nick i need help

My dad has been in a hospital for a while now. I stay with him all day and night until around 2 am or so, when he falls asleep, and I go home and get some sleep. The hospital staff is horrible. It takes them 45 minutes to bring my dad a drink, to get him pills, etc... I stay with him and do the things that the hospital staff should do, but they don't because they are too busy or don't care.
Here's the problem. I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. The hospital is in North Las Vegas, Nevada. At night when I leave it is a HORRIBLE neighborhood. Gangs everywhere. My question is What rights do I have to bring a shotgun and leave it in my car, and use it in self defense, if I get car jacked or mugged with a knife or gun? I park as close to the door as possible. Because I park pretty close to the door, I'm more worried about this happening at a stoplight, or something like that.
I'm 18 Could I put one of my dad's pistols in the car? I'm talking everything legally. I'm going to be going to college in August, and make something of my life, I don't need any charges of anything on my record.
