careers in art (graphic design/interior designer)?

soo im a junior in HS and im thinking this would be a cool job and id enjoy it..but the thing is i'm not that involved with art in school....i like art and use photo editing at home for like MY pictures and stuff.. but the only classes i've taken for art is advertising, photography, and general art. I don't have a portfolio and don't know what to put in one. Am i too late to start thinking about all this for a career?

id like to make things for magazines...cd's etc..

also would i have a better chance of making a better salary if i moved to a larger city??
