Hi,

I have a 1988 Ford Escort, 1.6L CVH petrol engine with an automatic transmission and a Webber VV TLD Carburettor.

I am burning oil somewhere along the lines because I have blue grey smoke on startup and I seem to be going through oil a fair bit.

Also, around where the rocker cover meets the block there is oil.

I popped thehood and started the engine and a puff of the same smoke that came out the back came out from the block too.

I am also unable to idle the car in a low gear. it just splutters then dies.

The engine has also got really loud lately. It sounds like a supercharged V8 and my missus says she can hear me coming from a block away.

That being said, the car still drives.

The problems all started when the engine overheated because some ninny (previous owner) left the fan disconnected. Some other ninny (me) didnt notice and was sitting in traffic when plumes of white crap came from under the hood.

I pushed the car to the side of the road and there was coolant and steam and everything everywhere.

Once it cooled I reconnected the fan, filled the coolant up again and it drove fine for a while but has been slowly going downhill ever since.

I plan on changing the sparks and the air filter, and also adjusting the idle screw on the carb to see if that fixes the idling issue.

Regarding the smoke tho... Im not sure if the head gasket needs replaced or another seal or what.

Any help would be appreciated!
