Hey I don't really get my carbon filter i haven't changed it in 1-2 months will it harm my fish if i don't change it? Also can i just add gravel or something to my filter to help filtration? aslo what else can i do to help my filter, filter my fish tank?

Thanks
But can i put gravel in my filter to help it filter the gunk and stuff and keep bacteria on it?

You should change your carbon filter (the cartridge) every month. Carbon removes any odors from the water, the yellowness, and any medicine or chemicals that may get into the water.

It won't harm your fish if you don't change the carbon. I'm guessing, though, that your carbon is in a filter cartridge and those can get dirty. Not that being dirty will hurt your fish, but is the filter cartridge gets clogged, it cuts back on the amount of water being turned over in your tank, and in extreme cases, it can cause the filter to over flow.

You can not add gravel to your filter to help with filtration. Depending on your filter, you can add additional media if space allows. Some filters come with baskets to add additional media - like more carbon, zeo-lites, filter floss, bio-balls, lava rocks, etc. If there is space, I would add something for bacteria, like the bio balls.

As for what other things you can do to help your filter, filter your tank - make sure you are not over feeding. Keep up on water changes. Make sure the impeller doesn't get funky. Rinse the dirty filter cartridge off in fish tank water when you are doing water changes (if you rinse it with tap water, it will kill the bacteria).

No not changing the filter in about 2 months will not harm you fish unless the filter is running slow at that point.....

as far as carbon depending on the about used it last about 2 weeks more if more carbon is used....and carbon does not release the particles in it....no i do recommend replacing carbon every month as it does remove phenol with naturally forms and can give water that yellow color....it also removes any house hold chemicals that may make there way into the tank....and also carbon keep the tank from smelling as much....

i would not put gravel in the filter as it my reduce the flow...most filters already have some type of bio media for bacteria growth.....

if you would like to add anything else to your filter i would only recommend something like "Seachem Purigen" that works like carbon but better

Carbon becomes exhausted in about one month

Activated carbon is useful for keeping water clear and your aquarium odor free- gravel will not do this.

Your filter will continue catching debris and breaking down fish waste without carbon.

-If your cartridge has become espeically filthy, you may rinse it out in a bucket of water removed during a partial water change. Do not rinse it under the tap. Replacement carbon can be bought at the pet shop in small or larger containers.

~There is no point in adding gravel to your filter. What sort of filter do you have?
