car wont crank what can be the problem...?

i got a 1996 corolla. was driving when i heard a crackeling sound in the front then car died. checked it an the rod that holds tne battery had got stuck to the positive lead on the battery. their was a burnt smell too. i seperated them checked the battery at a autozone n is fine. when i put in the key on all the light turn on but when i try to start it, it all dies n have to wait a few mins to try again. any idea what it might be... also checked fuzes they all looked good
