...make an insurance claim? Car had small coolant leak. Mechanic replaced intake. Went to start car, and the engine blew. Theories? Car was running fine up until the point of the new intake. Should mechanic be responsible for repairs? How do I make a claim against his liability insurance?
This is a 1997 Mustang GT with a 4.6L
Car went in for a small coolant leak. Replace t-stat o-ring still leaked. Did that 3 times. Finally saw their was a crack in the intake. So they replaced the intake manifold. They replaced, and when they went to start engine they heard a loud BOOM. Engine never started. Engine will turn though. I have a few pieces of engine block and a hole in the motor now.
Cylinder #5 is the culprit. Cylinder near the intake issue.
Engine only has 72,000 miles. Not rough. Never in the winter either.
As for an explanation, they theorize that "somehow" there was water in the chamber. How it got their, they are unsure. They were pretty dumbfounded at this whole ordeal.
They said they vacuumed out any water before putting new intake on. BUt if a piston was sitting low there could have been water the vacuum couldn't reach. It has been suggested they should have just left off the spark plug, crank the engine, and purged any water that way. I'm not a mechanic, so I just don't know.

The repair have a warranty? If so, then the mechanic is responsible to cover the new engine or at least a rebuilt one installed.
