Car vs No car at college?

For those who are/were in a large university, I'm curious about your opinion of owning and using a car on campus. I'll be heading off next year, and have done some cost computing. Because of absurdly large insurance rates and misc parking passes, I'll be facing around $3000/year in costs, not including gas, repair, or upkeep. If it's possible, I'd love to do away with this cost if possible. (Even if that means just parking it in my garage year round)

Is it possible to actually go carless at a large university, or is a vehicle basically a requirement?

Don't bother with the car, at least your first year. Many colleges won't let first year students have a car on campus anyway. You'll be living in the dorms and many colleges have free bus systems - you almost certainly won't need a car.
