Car Trouble, ABS Brakes?

I just bought a new car... Whenever I try to brake, the car jerks as if the ABS is coming on, but the ABS light doesn't come on. Has anyone heard of this problem before? or does anyone have a solution to this? any ideas would be appreciated... thanks :)
The jerking happens everytime I brake hard... if I brake slowly, it wont come on, but if i brake hard, then the car will start to jerk
 
the ABS light will only come in if there is a problem--otherwise, it should come on only when you first start your car, then shut off after a few seconds. The jerking of the car is probably the ABS kicking in--this will stop the car from skidding. But if you suspect there is a problem, have it fixed ASAP--nothing worse than driving a car w/ brake problems
