Car trouble 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix, broken down!?

So i was noticing a little knocking as i was driving, put some gas treatment in and then the car just wouldn't go into gear. If i turned off the engine and waited a minute and then started it back up, it would run again for about 90 seconds. then no more gear. Its an automatic, btw. Is this the transmission or something else, i feel the tranny would either go or not go, no matter if i started the car or not.
ok, i meant re-started it. I thought that once the transmission was gone it wouldnt work temporarily after restarting engine.

the reason i ask is because its on the side of the road and i dont want to fix the transmission.
