Car still overheats after several mechanic visits?

So I've gotten screwed twice so far on my 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback.
It overheated on the 23rd, spurting coolant out the radiator cap. Heat did not work. Brought it to Midas and paid them $170 to pressure test it, tell me the upper radiator hose was leaking, and replace it. I asked them several times if it wasnt the thermostat, the upper hose was under a vaccuum (sucked inward) and the lower hose was cold. Coolant clearly was not flowing. So anyway I drove it 150 miles no problem, and then it overheated again on the 24th, same situation. I let it cool down for about an hour, started it up and the thing worked fine, no overheating. Brought it into the shop for another look, this time I was told it was a corroded fan wire ($120). Okay. Its the 31st and it overheated YET AGAIN. Same situation as before - no heat, spurting out the radiator cap, let it sit 30 minutes and it ran fine after that.

Seems pretty obvious to me that its the thermostat, but then again I'm no mechanic. What do you guys think (aside from the obvious fact that I keep getting screwed)?

BTW I replaced the thermostat back in March for similar troubles, so it is only 9 months old...
