Car stereo shuts off when lights are turned on.?

about a month ago my sony cd player all of a sudden died and would turn on then turn off. i then put my factory stereo back in and i noticed right away that my stereo would shut off when the headlights are turned on. i have also tried to reconnect the sony cd player but i cannot get that running either. help please
 
you might not have enough power, or the alternator might not be giving enough power to the battery (that's what my dad's saying). i have a 35 year old car and it doesn't always have enough power to run the headlights, indicator and stereo at the same time.
