Car stereo loses sound when car is started. although the strereo remains on.?

The sound goes once the car is started for example say your listening to something when the car is off then you switch the car on and it loses the sound but the display is still on, (its a small screen dvd player) Im pretty good with stereo systems but cant figure this one out. I was just wondering if any one knows of any soultions?? On cars ive previously had the systems usualy stays on the whole time uless you take the keys out which is what im after. ALTHOUGH is this something thats effecting the stereo system??

i don't really know if you can change that. but i know that in all the cars I've ever driven the stereo always goes out when you start the car but turns back on afterwards. If the car doesn't cut power to the stereo and just mutes it. then i would think an after market stereo would change that. thats just my best guess though.
