car stereo, audio problem?

I recently installed a CD player into my old 84' honda accord. The sound works but whenever I turn the volume up to a loud level it goes silent and I have to turn the player off and then back on again for it to come back. This happens every time the volume gets to a certain point. Does anyone know what might be causing this and how to fix it? i was thinking that it might be the old speakers? any help?
 
Speakers are not powerful enough for the stock wattage that comes off of an up-to-date CD player.
