Car speakers crackling?

Whenever it rains (I live in the desert so this doesn't happen very often), my car speakers have made a REALLY loud crackling/static-ish sound that doesn't change when I adjust the volume or change from the radio to CD or vice versa. Any idea what would be causing this? I assume that since it only seems to happen when it is wet outside that it has something to do with the rain, but I'm not positive, and I know absolutely nothing about cars or anything in them.

Also, I just had a new stereo deck installed (professionally) the day before it started raining, and everything worked fine, but now I have the crackling sound again and I can't get any sound from the speakers (in auxiliary, radio, or CD mode), except for the loud crackle sound. Could the two be related, or is it possible that the crackling and the no sound problems are caused by different things?

Thank you so much and I really appreciate any answers that might point me in the right direction!

Also, I forgot to add a couple things, I think.

Today there has been a different smell in my car, I'm not sure if it's just because it's new electronics or if it's some part of it or something in the wiring is getting too warm.

The crackling stops when I turn the stereo off completely, but does nothing when I adjust the volume. It's so loud that I can't have it on at all for more than a second or two while I'm in the car.

I had perfect sound the first day, the second day I had static and sound, the next day I had static and no sound.

the crackling is form one or more speakers shorting or grounding themselves out on the door panel or back dash
