Car problem for a 2004 pontiac...?

My girlfriend has a 2004 pontiac grand am 6cyl.. she was sitting at the drive thru and it shut off. it starts and shuts off again right away. had to tow it home, some people have said alternator, timing belt, and fuel sender. i dont think its the alternator cuz the battery would just be dead right?? no re start.. its not a timing belt cuz the car has a timing chain. i dont understand how this works though. im thinking maybe fuel sender or fuel filter cuz she puts cheap arco gas in. what could be wrong with it and how much is the part and how labor intensive is it?? would a code reader diagnose any of the problems suspect???
 
if you mean it shuts off as soon as she drops it down in gear? if that,s what your saying then it could be the sensor that operates the lock-up converter. if it stalls right after she starts it then it could be that the gas filter is starting to clog up.
