Car hit in the rear - trying to blame me?

I was in the left hand lane exiting a roundabout, when the third party driver was in the right hand merging lane (merging into my left hand lane). He was speeding and was roughly a cars length behind me, to avoid a collision I sped up so he could merge safely behind me.

We then proceeded to drive down the road, the third party repeatedly beeping his horn and flashing his lights at me (I think he didn’t like me being in front of his vehicle and clearly wanted me out of his way). Around 250 meters from the roundabout the third party driver decided to ram the back of my vehicle, I was shunted forward - screaming with fear at this mad man behind me. I then sharply applied my brakes and the third party driver hit the rear of my vehicle for a second time, (we both came to a stop at this point).

I was so upset, but the third party driver was trying to blame me, saying that I had pulled in front of him and slammed on my brakes… I was so shocked, I didn’t know what to do. The third party driver then said he was calling the police to report me as a dangerous driver - again, I was still in shock.

My boyfriend who was with me in my car, called the police too, as the third party driver was being so aggressive toward myself and my boyfriend. The police arrived and took a lot of details from the third party driver and took his side of the ‘story’, but no one came to speak to me… they just took my car details, made sure I was fully insured and had a valid driving licence. (I feel the police believed him and not me - but why when it was clear from the damage to my car that he had rammed me).

The third party driver’s insurance company are now saying that they dispute that claim, and are saying that I have swerved in front of him and applied my brakes causing the accident! Obviously my insurance company has the truth from me, and are fighting it, but I am so distressed that someone can even think of doing such a thing.

Please advise if you think that this will fall onto me being blamed - I am 100% not to blame and don’t want my insurance to be affected (eight years no claims)…

Thank you (sorry for any grammatical/spelling mistakes - English is not my strong point).
