Car has been repossessed with some stuff in it?

we have two sons who are repo drivers, and both said that all of the cars that they tow are immediately stripped to the bare bones when it gets to the shop, regardless of ownership or content, then washed and sent to auction, what ever was in there was trashed and sent to the land fill morning after. kiss it good bye, sol
 
When my car was repossessed because the payment was mailed back for a lack of 3 cents on the postage so it was late by a day or two the guy repossessing it was about to take it away when my mom went out to talk to him. Then i asked if we had to take everything out of the car and he said we didn't have to but we could so i decided to just in case. But he though we got everything out so just drove away with my car in tow. But there was still a 3-4 hundred dollar pair of glasses my dad bought awhile back and a bunch of cds in the cd player. Now Honda decided to sell the car only after a day or two after repossession. How can i get the stuff back. Is he legally supposed to mail everything back to us or is he allowed to sell it off?
