car drive systems help?

alright im not much of a tinker mechanic type person and i kno many of you are..

my question is what is the difference between drive systems in certain cars?

i kno they have front wheel drive and rear wheel drive...

i also heard that some cars juss have 1 wheel spinning instead of two or 4 which makes it bad to use in weather like snow is that true?
 
When 1 wheel spins you do not have posi-traction which is usally an option. On 4 wheel drive when engaged in snow or other ough weather keeps the car/truck more stable.
