Car audio system, Sup&amp or new speakers?

So I drive a small s-10 truck, there's not a lot of space in the cab except between the bucket seats. It has an older head unit, but it's not stock. My roommate can get a good deal on electronics and I want to use it before we split for summer, so...
Do you guys think I should invest in a small sub and amp and/or new speakers?

---I heard that if you upgrade the speakers it could also require an amp i was wondering if i got a sub and an amp with a higher rating - could i hook up the sub and speakers to the amp, or could the speakers be taken care of with a new head unit, or even just left alone?

finally, do i need to worry about my alternator/battery if i invest in all this electronic stuff? I have a good battery, optima, but I'd hate to take it for granted and ruin it

a lot of questions, sorry, but thanks for the help. just looking for a way to improve the experience

I would get a new head unit...it helps your sounds quality a LOT. Also, if you run a sub, you will need an amp. Maybe not a big amp but you will need one. Also, as long as you only run the system when the engine is running, you should be fine as far as your battery goes. I would go for it! If he can get you a good deal, jump on it.

Well you don't necessarily need an amp with a sub, but I'd highly recommend it. You can even get a custom box for that s10 very small, 1 ten? I wouldn't be concerned about the elecrtonic stuff.
