Car and bike licence?

I've had a car licence for 30 odd years. It used to be that I could use that as a provisional licence for a bike up to 250cc.But now I'm thinking about getting one, I'm being told that I can only ride a bike up to 125cc and then only after training. In my distant youth you just bought one from a shop, jumped on and went!
I'm confused. Can anyone enlighten me?

yes you need a C.B.T then you can ride a 125cc two years before you take the motorbike test not if you need lplates but think you may.

Hi

ok if you passed your Car Test before 2001 which im Guessing you did because you said you been driving 30 ood years You do not need to do a CBT so you can ride any motorbike for to 125cc if you want to ride bigger bikes you need to do a Theory Test its Easy then you do your Practial bike test

I did a 3 day course 2 and half days training and Test included cost me £440

you have to take a CBT course - only a day, then you can ride a 125cc for a year with L plates. If you want to ride a bigger bike you need to do a full bike test and then you can ride bigger than a 125cc. you also have to do the theory test and hazard perception test at a local centre before you even think about riding a 125cc. if you call up any bike training schools in your area they will point you in the right direction. you can also do a 5 day training course and take your test at the end of that and ride a bigger bike straight away. I believe they changed the rules because so many people were being hurt because they had no training and just jumped on a bike and rode away. you have to go through all this training and tests even if you have a full car licence. hope this helps

You need to complete a CBT (compulsary Basic Training) to show you are safe on a mopehead or motorbike and lasts for 3 years.

It's basically a con to get more money off people !!

With you passing so long ago though i'm not 100% sure you need to take this. I would check with DVLA

yes it's true,to ride a moped your ok,a 125 you need compulsory basic training and the reason is a modern 250 will do a real 130+ on track where as a rd 250 may have done 90.If you have not ridden for thirty years just compare a bike to a space invader the performance of todays bikes are play station 3s ,If you really want a bike get the best training you can with some track work, advanced road etc.How many of your mates are not here because of those old laws?,i know i lost a few and todays roads and drivers are no safer than then. Good luck at passing your tests..
