Captivate or Aria for first smartphone?

Pluses for the Aria:
1. HTC Sense UI.
2. Smoother out of the box.
3. HTC Updates it's products regularly.
4. Smaller and more pocket-able.
5. Soft keys stay lit as long as the screen does.

Pluses for Captivate:
1. Slightly better better life (not much better)
2. Larger SAMOLED Display.
3. Much faster GPU (for graphics).

It all comes down to personal choice. I had the Captivate but returned it after a couple of weeks. I have two friends who have the Aria ad I have played around with it quite a bit and I find the Aria to be more enjoyable.

Cool, thanks. I was leaning more towards the Captivate, but I do like the smaller size of the Aria, and the soft keys staying lit as long as the screen does is also a plus.

If the size of the Aria doesn't bother you, and you don't need ULTIMATE GPU POWAH then it'll probably be your better bet. The Captivate, once ROMed, is faster and a beast, but it's a bit big.

My girlfriend just got the Droid X through Verizon, which I guess is a tiny bit bigger than the Captivate, and it's big but not really so bad. I personally prefer smaller phones usually, and I don't need all that much power, so the Aria will probably be what I go for now. Is it buggy at all? Thanks.

The Captivate is a monster when it's ROMed though. Quadrant scores in the low 2000's with the ext4 (2500's with ext2). And the screen is AMAZING; second only to the iPhone 4 screen for me (I prefer the pixel density personally).

Look at this benchmark site:

http://smartphonebenchmarks.com

It lists Quadrant scores for pretty much every Android phones sold in the past and now...

My soft keys aren't always lit when I'm using mine. I haven't been able to figure out a clear trend, though. It may be realted to the ambient lighting sensor.

As was said before if screen size isn't important to you the Aria is smoother out of the box. It's fast and never seems to be laggy. Camera and video performance isn't even close to the Captivate so that should be considered too. Gps performance wins on the Aria. As you can see there are pros for both so it's personal preference. I have both and overall prefer the Captivate.....although I'm using an iPhone 4 as my main phone now so I'd recommend it over either of them.
Also check out the Samsung Focus and HTC Surround as I'm really liking them as well.
