Why do we give Captain James Cook the credit for discovering Australia. Willem Jansz, Dirck Hartog and Abel Tasman (Who discovered Tasmania and named it Van Damiens Land, even when the British took over and renamed it years later they named it TASMANia, showing that they knew Abel Tasman discovered it), all Dutch charted and mapped Australia. Even William Dampier from Captain Cook's own country, England, charted parts of Australia. Yet somehow Captain Cook gets all the credit for discovering Australia. Why?
