This is a rant. If you do not like rants, feel free to ignore this one.

I have been around the internet. I'm not saying that to try to seem worldly, I'm just telling you. I've been to discussion boards based around websites, movies, video games, books, and the one thing they all have in common is mind-blowing supernova-style hatred. I eventually came to expect this, but I was a bit shocked to find that cartoons had their own little fan-wars too.

I mean, whats to fight about? It's a cartoon. Animated Television Series, if you wanna be new-agey, but you know what I mean.

Apparently there is a great deal to fight about. On one side you've got the anime nuts, who are exactly what they sound like they are. If something is not made in Japan, it's crap. Disney? crap. Nickelodeon? crap. And whenever a foreing show adopts a style similar to anime ("cough" Avatar "cough") it is viciously attacked and accused of being... well... crap.

The U.S.A nuts are a more outspoken group, but they are equally annoying, and in fact are what inspired this rant (look here: http://forum.deviantart.com/galleries/cartoons/1146195/) These people assume that the only good cartoons ever made were made in the 80s. Smurfs, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, yadda yadda yadda.... thats all good. But Spongebob sucks, Teen Titans sucks, everything (even revivals of 80s shows!) suck.

I know everyone is entitled to an opinion. I'm all for that. But what I don't like is when a person adopts an unbearable "I'm right you're wrong" attitude and refuses to allow any other opinions to sway them (another thing I hate is poorly written criticism, but thats a different rant...). Why can we not admit that all shows have their perks? Why can we not realize that they're all friggin cartoons, and the only real difference is where they were made? (Britain, by the way, never seems to enter this argument...)

Anyway, I don't really know how to end this, but then rants are supposed to be a bit rambling, right? Refer to title for ending sentence. TTFN.
 
Not sure about that Teen Titans sucks comment but the truth of the matter is that as long as something exists, some will like it and some will hate it. It's always hard to find something that will click with everyone and cause them not to argue with each other but there's always that one little troll that has to start something and throw the internet and thus the world into a frenzy and has everyone taking sides.

I mean, I personally never saw the point of the whole "Is Code Geass racist?" argument before but apparently its extremely serious on the net. I even wrote once on here "Can't we just enjoy the show" when I said that it was just a show and...um...yeah.

Anyway, the best thing to do is avoid said arguments and hope that one day everyone sees eye to eye...and realizes that we've all been arguing over our favorite cartoons and can respect each others opinions.
(I completely respect yours over Teen Titans by the way. I can understand why you'd say it sucks)
 
Unfortunately, you can't stop the snobs and the haters from doing what they do. As long as these media exist, there will be lunatic fringes on both sides for them. It's as inevitable as the tides.

As my brother (who's also a member here) once said, "It's ironic to witness a battle of wits between the "ANIME RULZ, USANIMATION SUXX!" people and the "USANIMATION RULZ, ANIME SUXX!" people because both sides typically fight unarmed.

There are an enlightened few (like myself and many others here) who don't fall for such rhetoric. I myself judge shows on an individual show-by-show, case-by-case basis. What matters it the quality and content of the show itself, not what country it happens to come from.
 
I did'nt say Teen Titans sucks. I love Teen Titans. I have a pimpin Raven smiley:raven: . I said thats what the 80's lovers say.
 
I'm also one of those types who judges each individual show on its own merits. The people who believe that an animated production is worthy of glorification above all others just because it was made in a certain country or in a certain decade really hock me off too. I'll concede that there were certain time periods where creativity and innovation was more prominent in animation, but that doesn't mean there's ever been a time where it was absent entirely from the medium. There is good to be found out there, and it just has to be sought out.
 
Speaking as a fan of anime, I like both anime and USA cartoons. I don't think all anime fans are like that about how USA cartoons suck. They are more picky tho.
 
I know what you're talking about, Radical_Raven. The exact same thing happens with the Mac/PC war. Both sides say the other is a piece of crud! Please, just stop the hate! Ugh, humans have the fiercest tendency to hate things which are different from what they are used to.:(
 
People just don't know the good that America can offer.Just because all of our men in animation aren't eye-balling the 'goods' or just because someone can't shoot a Kamea Kamea wave out of their hands,doesn't mean it's rubbish.

My advice:try to introduce them to some good storylines and point out the deep story arcs found in some animated shows and movies:Avatar (has some),Teen Titans (has some darnet!It does not suck) just to name a few.

If they're still full of themselves,well,just tell them to have a nice life. ;)
 
Personally,I'm always amazed that people have to take sides on this....I love animation,period,and always have....Country of origin means nothing to me,I watch whatever series/movies appeal to me (I'm just as likely to watch South Park,Futurama,or Gargoyles as I am Naruto,Bleach,or Fullmetal Alchemist....and I love Disney movies as much as Studio Ghibli's films,for example)...
I also hate when people say things like "all American animation sucks" or "all anime sucks".....TV series/movies should be judged on their content,not on what country they come from...
 
Any debate with only two sides gets boring fast. Once people start discussing animation from outside America and Japan, this stuff might get kind of interesting.
 
Like Is said, MonkeyFunk (yor'e name is ridiculously fun to say) Europe (the third biggest animation place, I think) never gets mentioned.

To be honest, thats what first drew me to this place... those cartoon characters in the top left corner. That proves, to me, that this site takes no favorites; you've got Mickey Mouse chillin' with Bender and Luffy D. Monkey with Kaptain Skurvy (the fact that Kaptain Skurvys here at all also helped).

Plus, you know-:raven2: :raven: :robin:
 
People in groups always split up and disagree on things. It's just the reality of large groups of people liking similar things but having different perspectives and taste. It happens in politics. It happens in fandom (especially shipping). It happens in science (educational backgrounds do account for this). It happens in art. I once heard a classmate talk about how puppeteer friends of his were split on whether or not their marionettes should have clear or visible strings.
