Can't use sprint phone because the owner of the phone before me didn't pay their bill?

Hello, I purchased a phone from a private party and I tried to activate it and the customer care person I talked to at Sprint says since the previous owner didn't pay their bill I cannot activate the phone. Is there some way to side step this and unlock the phone or something like that? If not then Sprint is a bunch of commies and I'll end my service with them and go to a different carrier
