My Dr told me I won't be aware of anything that is happening.
A lot of Drs here in the States are using Propofol which I believe is something like a hypnotic; you think you are asleep and feel nothing but you're really not. It
sounRAB weird.

When my husband had his colonoscopy he said he remerabers being wheeled into the operating room and then doesn't remeraber anything until waking up in recovery.

I have an apt on january 21. It is for the upper GI. I have had one apt already and they suspect Gerd. I am scared also but I just hope I get an answer/help for this. I am so fursturated with it. the feeling every day is very depressing and uncomfortable. Thanks for your concern and I will let u know when I get an answer.

Generaly they give you IV Diazepam (Valium), with or without morphine/pethedeine

I have had this procedure done twice. I can honestly say it was nothing, I didn't even have a sore throat. Living in Aussie it might be done differently to the States. I had what they call a twilight general. It's administered by IV and is a light anaesthetic, I was totally out of it but woke soon after it was finished and didn't have any groggy after effects. I wasn't a tiny bit nervous about the second one. It really isn't anything. Good luck.

I have had stomach problems, acid reflex, and digestive problems for 20 years. I have been taking omperzole twice a day, acid pills every day for two years and was supose to get the scope down my throat last year but not having good insurance i have not done this. Now For the last week I cant swallow any food. I cant even take my operzole because they get stuck in my throat. Can Anyone sugest some remidy to push what ever is stuck in my throat down? It is driving me crazy sitting there. I cant get to a speacilist in this small town tell dec 15 for help.

Hi Nickie and all! I have mine scheduled for Jan. 9th. It is an endoscopy and they told me over the phone they would be check my throat, esoph, stomach and upper intestine. Quite alot of territory. I am scared but I feel I need to follow through with this and have it all checked out.

I am scared of complications. Anyone know of any of had any? I am almost afraid to ask. Thanks!

They lady told me over the phone it would be an IV of a sedative. I would be pretty out of it, and not really remeraber and then wake up in recovery. SounRAB good to me if I don't panic in the chair as they start the whole process.

I even got freaky and asked them what if I had an allergic reaction to the sedative could they save me. I guess the have a med to reverse what you had taken. This would be rare. But heck I wanna know. It's my life and I have never had this done. I haven't really been put under. I do think I had dimerol when I had a baby and it was nice...haha! I was in and out of it. Really took the edge off. I wasn't allergic to that. So it should be ok.

They said the whole procedure is only 20 mins. But the prep is 1 hour and recovery 1 hour. I just want it safely over with. I know lots of people who chicken out including my own mother!

Anyone having it done please let us know how it goes, and anyone who has please share details. Thanks!

Not to scare you, but I have had problems with acid reflux and stomach problems in general for a long time, but recently I found the inability to swallow just about everything. My doctor referred me to a gastro doc and they did a scope two weeks ago. They diagnosed me with Barretts esophagus, at 27. I would strongly suggest getting a scope done.

Hi,

I don't know of any complications other than a sore throat from the scope.

Mine is scheduled for Jan 21 if I don't "chicken out". I know though that I need to have it done.

Please let us know how yours goes on the 9th.

Hi, my doctors appointment went just fine. No endoscopy yet, but thanks to you guys i am not worried at all, except i am going to request no shot, for when i do have to get one. Thanks guys!

Man i really dont want to have to deal with any needles. I will just ask if they will give me morphine or something before hand so that im already somewhat out of it when they give me the IV. Well i find out today if i am going to have to get it done! I really just want to get one down so that i can get better already.

Thanks guys!

To dislodge something that is stuck in your throat or esophagus, try drinking Diet Coke. They even use this method in hospitals and also if things get stuck in people with feeding tubes.

I had an upper endoscopy about 9 months ago. There is nothing to be afraid of. They knocked me out for it- I only remeraber the doctor spraying my throat & talking to me- then waking up. They spray some nasty tasting stuff in your throat to help nurab it & get the scope down.

I had no complications- my throat was slightly sore- but nothing like when you are sick with a sore throat.

Hi Em! Tell us how your doctor visit goes today ok! I will keep you in my prayers! Thanks!

Hi Em!

What did your Dr say? Did he prescribe any medication?

I'm glad you don't have to have an endoscopy.

You could ask for a tranqiliser by mouth before you go in.. a small dose of Valium or Xanax

Nickie, did you ever get your appointment yet? I was just wondering how things came out for you. I am getting an appointment for the same thing. I am so scared. I would just like some reassurance. Let us know how you are. Thanks!

Hi i am curious as to how they sedate you? Did they use the mask with the general anesthesia or is it an IV that they use to sedate you?

I find out tomorrow if i have to get one done and im pretty sure he is going to ask me to.

Hi Chantel, my doctor gave my nexium to take everynight and then if that isnt strong enough she said to take my zantac in the morning also. She gave me an exam and said she couldnt feel any growths, she thinks i probably have a hiatal hernia because of a lot of my pain is right where my stomach is but it isnt like ohh my tummy hurts,, its the burning feeling or a sharp feeling.

She also said she thinks i had really horrible medical care over the summer and because of that she thinks i had nemona (sp) and because of it that is probably why the sides and my rib area hurt so bad still. She said it will take a while for it to heal if it ever does. Not much she said she could do.
