After having a urinary tract infection I seem to have picked up some some kind of painful spine/soft tissue in back disorder...docs don't know what it is. But generally the symptoms include: after falling asleep with no problem, at about 2:30am every morning I begin to have shoulder/neck/upper-mid backaches if lying in one position for more than a few minutes, also had sharp lower back and hip pain that have gotten better with time, walking and stair stepping, but still have weird aches in those areas, now my neck is becoming effected by this...lots of achiness there. Tried Ibuprofen/Tylenol and Celebrex all had almost no benefit and pain didn't get worse after discontinuing Celebrex after one month. Rheumy blood tests were all normal, don't have any swollen or red joints, no fever, some mild morning stiffness in knees and just a little in lower back but nothing I'd say is abnormal for a 40 year old who's been a bit hard on his body over the years, x-rays showed mild OA in hips and SI joint, lurabar MRI showed mild degeneration of one disc and one joint. This has been going on for 2 months and I'm a 40 year old active male (active up until this), normal weight with desk job...any ideas? Please help, I'm really having a hard time coping with this constant achiness, pain and significantly reduced mobility.

Hello, Adam...my heart and prayers go out to you! Do you see a Pain Management doctor or a "spine specialist" for your pain? Have you tried any other types of medication(s) for your condition? Have you had physical therapy? I pray that you will soon find the source(s) of your pain!

Maybe you need to have an MRI of your upper back. Have you seen an orthopedic physician? If you've only seen your GP up 'til now, I would recommend finding an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in spines, preferably one who has done a fellowship. Seeing a surgeon does not automatically mean they'll want to do surgery. But the specialists are more knowledgeable and have seen more types of problems. Since you've gone on for a while now without a good diagnosis, I'd say it's time for a specialist.

Hope you can get some answers,
Emily

Blueatlas, thank you very much for your suggestions and feedback, I'm glad to see that at least I'm in line with what your recommending because I just saw spine surgeon for the first time last week who reviewed a lower back MRI that only showed mild degeneration of one disk and one joint...at first I was worried about that but he said that that's actually pretty common amongst 40year olRAB (my age) and even 30 year old's who've been pretty hard on their bodies. So he said furtunately I'm not a surgical candidate and he referred me to a physiatrist in his practice (doc of spine/arthritis physical therapy). He also ordered a c-spine MRI before I see the the new doc next week, so we'll see what she says. This is so weird because it all came out of the blue...one day I'm going about life with no aches and pains and literally the next day I have body aches, then a urinary tract infection, followed by sharp/severe aches and pains in hips, lower back, and now upper back and neck. While the docs have been technically good at finding mild arthritis and disc degeneration, they've been cluesless as to the overall illness that has caused this to develope so quickly. Maybe I have some kind of virus that antibiotics would help, or I don't know????...very frustrating and painful. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!

I am thankful that you have an upcoming appointment with a physiatrist (spelling?) next week. I pray that he/she will find your source of pain. Please continue to keep us all updated about your upcoming appointment and condition!

adamhi I get what you mean about wondering how things could be so different so quickly Im 43, and in the past few months some degenerative disc/ arthritis has turned up in my knees, lower back and neck on x rays (no mri`s yet). Im also concerned about a clicking feeling occasonally in my shoulder and hip. Most of the pain is mild and doesnt last long, but why is it in so many areas, and what am I in for? Let us know what results you get, hoping that nothing gets worse for any of us!

I wonder if you are having a problem with L5 level of your spine. I have problems sleeping on my side and my husband swears he is sleeping with a fish because I flip flop all night long. The pain is so bad that I have to keep changing positions and forget laying on the back. LOL

Supposedly, I have had a nerve that was compressed that they have decompressed twice and I still have the pain.

Maxnj, well it's good that your pain seems to at least be under control...mine is constant. The good news is that my docs told me that it's not uncommon for a "sample of 40 year olRAB" and even 30 year olRAB to have mild osteoarthritis in joints and mild degeneration in the spine, especially if they've been hard on their bodies, and I've been pretty hard on mine with sports, so this may not be as big of a deal as we think. And that's what ticks me off at my doctors, they're great for pointing out some mild arthritis/degeneration but haven't offered a clue as to if this is why I feel so aweful so suddenly with no injuries...ugh! It's like going into the doctor with chicken pox and him telling you you have a rash and a fever....what about the overall illness?? Anyhow, good luck to you, and if I find anything relevant out from my new doctor next week I'll share it on this string.
